Our LAST Playfully Wild! class for the school year is tomorrow and it’s our favorite day- Paint Party!!

Join us for paint slip n slide, body painting, painting with water sprayers and sponges, or paint with your feet! Not into paint? We’ll have water play and our regular fun too.

Dress for the messiest day of your life so far, we’ll have water and wash cloths to help get cleaned up after all the fun.

Class is held at The Moss House Preschool (183 Riverside Dr in Binghamton) from 10:00-11:30. Parking is in the back at the bottom of the driveway. Donations are welcome and will benefit our Keep Camp Affordable fundraiser.

We’ve got just TWO classes left for the school year and this week we’re making ice cream in a bag! Join us at Playfully Wild! to play in our yard and make ice cream in a bag (dairy and dairy-free versions available).

This program is for children and their caregivers and meets at The Moss House Preschool, 183 Riverside Drive in Binghamton. Parking is in the back, behind the building. Donations are welcome and will be used for our Keep Camp Affordable fundraiser.

We’re celebrating the bees this week at Playfully Wild! Come learn about how bees help make more flowers, build a portable bee tunnel house, and play Pollinator Tag. We’ll also talk about how to share a space with bees and work on not being afraid of them.

Playfully Wild! is a caregiver and child class and meets every Thursday 10:00-11:30 at The Moss House Preschool (183 Riverside Drive Binghamton). Parking is behind the building. Donations welcome and will be contributed to our Keep Camp Affordable fundraiser.

Join us at Playfully Wild! this week to brew forest potions and fancy drinks. We’ll be making fruit and herb infused waters to drink and mixing up some leaf and flower potions!

This is learning in action!!

At first glance, it’s a messy slide. But everything seen here is placed with purpose and care. The Moss House Preschool has been spending time learning about Backyard Friends- centipedes, wasps, moles, lady bugs, and more. We’ve been talking about everyone’s jobs in the yard, and how each insect has a part to play. The preschoolers have taken a deep interest in finding and caring for the tiniest creatures.

And now the slide. A child noticed that some millipedes had died in the rain puddle at the bottom of the slide. This made her sad, and she decided to prevent this from happening again. Using leaves to make boats and mulch to make an island, this child wanted to make sure that no insect got stuck in the puddle again. She tested each leaf, making sure it wouldn’t sink and would help insects escape the water.

Why is this a big deal?

Play is the work of children, making sense of their world. This child demonstrated what she learned and applied it to a new situation. She showed empathy for things smaller than herself. She practiced creative problem solving.

Building this strong foundation in early childhood sets children up to succeed for the rest of their life. Children who attend child-led nature programs enter kindergarten equally ready as children attending academic or play-based preschools. Learning in an open natural setting like The Moss House encourages whole-child development, leading to happy healthy children who are more curious, more empathetic, and less likely to experience anxiety and depression as they grow up.
