Cassie Losey, HFA's senior manager of state affairs, spent the week in California preparing for the next legislative session, which is set to kick off in December.

She met with our partners at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP regarding legislative priorities for 2027 in California, including cold spa legislation and tax incentives for physical and mental health.

She also met with California Chamber of Commerce to discuss potential collaborations on Private Attorneys General Act-related issues and membership opportunities.

And on top of all of that, she fit in a spin class with Alicia Priego and Stephanie Tapia Jiménez from Brownstein! 🚴

Our state advocacy team stays on the heartbeat of policy across all 50 states, and we're ready to hit the ground running next session!

Surveyed operators reported 10.7% median revenue growth and 6.1% median net membership growth.

But the story goes beyond the numbers.

Last week, our interim president & CEO Greta Wagner called on fitness leaders during an address at Fitness Brasil Expo 2026 to work together to strengthen the industry’s role in improving global health!

She also emphasized the importance of collaboration across markets, pointing to HFA’s 26-year partnership with Fitness Brasil as an example of how the global industry can build a stronger, more unified voice.

“The greatest product the industry offers is not a treadmill, a membership card or an app,” Wagner said. “It is belonging.”

That’s the long-term vision: a future where exercise is recognized not simply as something that supports health, but as an essential part of healthcare.

Getting there means bringing the health and fitness industry into conversations with policymakers, public health organizations, healthcare leaders, researchers, employers, and others who are shaping how we think about health.

🏋‍♀️ River Valley Fitness & Training Center owner Randy Hilmer invited Rep. Steve Womack to tour his facility after being inspired by his experience at HFA’s 2026 Fly-In and Advocacy Summit. The visit even led members of Womack’s staff to return for a workout!

🤝 At OneLife Fitness, the company's CEO and HFA board member Ori Gorfine welcomed Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, along with Sylvia Glass, Loudoun County Broad Run District Supervisor, and Tony Howard, president and CEO of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, to celebrate the opening of a new location.

What does buying apples have to do with fitness? 🍎

Nothing, actually.

A consumer's relationship with a supermarket (where they buy apples) is transactional. Where they choose to spend their time and money for groceries can change day to day.

Gyms, on the other hand, operate on a subscription model. Consumers make a commitment to invest their finances and their time in the fitness business. And oftentimes, that commitment becomes part of the consumer's identity.

This means owners and operators have a great responsibility to create and execute on a value proposition that gives consumers what they're hoping for from their gym: a second home, an identity marker.
