“Wait... what actually is music therapy?” ❓🎧
We get asked this all the time! Whether you’re looking for an afternoon activity for yourself, your teen, or someone you know, here’s a quick breakdown of how music therapy works—and why it’s so much more than just a music lesson.
Q: Is it just listening to music?
A: Not at all! While listening can be part of it, music therapy is interactive and goal-directed. It uses active music-making—like songwriting, song recreation, composition, lyric analysis, jamming, and vocal exploration—to support mental health, self-expression, communication, physical movement, cognition, community building and more.
Q: Do I (or my kid) need to be a "good" musician to join?
A: Zero musical background required! There’s no right or wrong way to make music here. Our board-certified music therapists provide all the instruments, gear, and personalized adaptations so anyone can jump right in.
Q: Who leads the sessions?
A: Board-Certified Music Therapists (MT-BCs) who use clinical, evidence-based music interventions tailored to each group's unique needs and creative choices.
