She opened the window. She wanted to leave. She wanted to go ā€œhome.ā€

She’s been living with family for years. But in her mind? Home is somewhere else. Somewhere from decades ago. And no amount of explaining can convince her otherwise.

This is dementia’s cruel trick. The feeling of being displaced, even when you’re exactly where you should be.

Has your loved one ever wanted to go ā€œhomeā€ when they were already there?

Grandpa stood up to leave the table. Made his exit. Made sure nobody would forget he was there.

The timing? Perfect. The volume? Impressive. The laughter from the family? Immediate.

Dementia takes so much. But some things? Some things remain.

What’s the funniest unexpected moment you’ve had with your loved one?

Grandma is 92. Has dementia. And she will not be eating green beans. She made that very clear.

Threats to pour them out. Threats to whip anyone who brings them. When offered five green beans a day? She’d rather see a doctor. šŸ˜‚

Some things dementia cannot take. Her independence. Her stubbornness. Her absolute refusal to eat greens.

What food does your loved one refuse no matter what?

6am. Son walks in from a long shift. Dad is already up. But not in this world.

ā€œMy plane got shot down.ā€ Dad thought he was in the war. He didn’t know where he was or how he got there. But his son gently guided him home.

This is dementia.

You can’t pour from empty.

Anxiety. Sadness. Frustration. Exhaustion. Emotional overwhelm.
These aren’t signs of failure. They’re signs you’ve been giving too much for too long.

Caregivers often carry emotional stresses silently while trying to remain strong for everyone else.
But unaddressed stress doesn’t disappear. It builds. And over time, it can lead to burnout, depression, and emotional fatigue.

Here’s the truth:
Asking for help is not weakness. It is wisdom.

Taking a break. Speaking with supportive people. Joining a community. Practicing prayer or meditation. Journaling. Seeking professional guidance.
These aren’t luxuries. They’re survival.

You deserve safe spaces where you can express emotion honestly, without judgment.

Grandpa has dementia. And an ice cream habit that shows no signs of slowing down.

Bowl after bowl. All day. He’s found his joy and he’s sticking with it. Who are we to stop him?

Dementia takes so much. But sometimes it leaves the simple pleasures intact. In this case? Ice cream. Endless. Delicious. Grandpa-approved.

What simple joy does your loved one never get tired of?

Ruth didn’t want to be there. She refused the pills. She refused the food. She refused to cooperate.

Then she found the kitchen.

She was a retired chef. And in that kitchen, she found purpose again. She cooked for everyone. She protected her caregiver from her supervisor. She found joy in feeding others.

Dementia took her memory. But it couldn’t take her skills. Or her heart.

Granddaughter offered doughnuts. Grandma had one clear request: glazed. No chocolate. Not now. Not ever.

ā€œI don’t deal with no chocolate. I don’t care what it is.ā€

But here’s the irony. She used to love chocolate. Dementia shifted something. Tastes change. Preferences shift. And grandma has drawn a firm line.

Grandson and grandpa. Hide and seek. Classic game. But grandpa has dementia, so there’s a twist.

He’s supposed to be looking for his grandson. He walks right past him. Doesn’t even register that he found who he was looking for. The game continues. Grandson watches. Grandpa keeps searching.

This is dementia. Sweet. Confusing. A little bit funny. And a whole lot of patience.

What game has your loved one played their own way?
