Who Exactly Are We Calling “God”?

We began this series with:

“Let US make mankind in OUR image.”

Then the biblical world became increasingly crowded.

We found:

Elohim.
The sons of God.
YHWH.
Angels.
The Destroyer.
And another divine “us” at Babel.

So maybe we need to change the question.

Instead of immediately asking:

“Why did God do this?”

perhaps we should first ask:

Which divine actor is actually speaking or acting?

Traditional Judaism and Christianity generally understand these beings within a hierarchy beneath one supreme God.

The Apocryphon of John, however, gives us another concept to compare them with: The One — incomprehensible, needing nothing, receiving nothing, and “not a being among other beings.”

Are all these figures simply names, agents, or manifestations within one divine system?

Or have we sometimes mentally collapsed a much more populated supernatural world into one English word:

“God”?

The text deserves a closer look.

Amalek: Divine Judgment — or a Lower Divine Ruler?

1 Samuel 15 gives us one of the hardest passages in the Old Testament.

The command is attributed to YHWH of Hosts.

Amalek is condemned for its earlier attack on Israel, and Saul is then instructed to destroy the population — explicitly including men, women, children, infants, and livestock.

Traditionally, this is explained as divine judgment.

But that still leaves another question:

What kind of divine being gives this command?

The Apocryphon of John describes ultimate reality — The One — as incomprehensible, beyond ordinary categories, needing nothing and receiving nothing.

So what does The One gain from the destruction of an entire population?

By that definition: nothing.

Are we looking at ultimate Source?

Or at a powerful divine ruler acting within creation?

This doesn’t prove the two are different beings. But the descriptions do not fit together neatly — and that is worth examining.

Tower of Babel: Was Humanity Wrong… or Was YHWH Threatened?

The Tower of Babel story gets framed as a warning against pride.

But look closely at Genesis 11.

Humanity is united. They speak one language. They work together. And YHWH says that if they continue, nothing they imagine will be impossible for them.

That raises a serious question:

Was Babel really about human evil — or about a lower divine ruler interrupting human unity and potential?

In this short, I compare that story with the description of The One in the Apocryphon of John — a reality described as beyond ordinary categories, beyond violence, and “not a being among other beings.”

Does the Babel story sound like that?

Or does it sound like a lesser divine actor operating inside creation?

Was the Flood Really the Work of “The One”?

Genesis raises a serious question.

When we read about the flood, or the Tower of Babel, are we really reading about The One — the ultimate Source described in the Apocryphon of John?

Or are we reading about a lower divine actor operating inside creation?

In Genesis 6, YHWH sees, regrets, reacts, and announces destruction.
In Genesis 11, humanity works together, and YHWH responds by confusing language and scattering people.

But in the Apocryphon of John, The One is described very differently — beyond ordinary categories, beyond need, and beyond beings.

So this episode asks a simple question:

Do the destructive acts in Genesis sound like The One?
Or do they sound more like a subordinate divine ruler acting within creation?

That distinction matters.

Divine does not automatically mean Source.

Genesis 6 gives us a populated supernatural world.

Then the text names YHWH specifically.

YHWH sees.
YHWH regrets.
And YHWH announces destruction.

Now compare that with how the Apocryphon of John describes The One:

incomprehensible
beyond knowledge
beyond ordinary categories of being and time
needing nothing
receiving nothing

And:

“The One is not a being among other beings.”

So does the divine personality acting in Genesis 6 sound like ultimate Source?

Or are we looking at different levels of divinity?

Powerful does not necessarily mean ultimate.

And divine does not automatically mean Source.

Genesis 6 introduces a very strange group:

the “sons of God.”

In Hebrew:

b’nei ha-Elohim.

And this time, the plurality isn't just hiding inside the word Elohim.

The Hebrew describes:

plural sons
who SAW — plural
and TOOK — plural

Then the next verse shifts to YHWH speaking in the singular.

Even more interesting?

Job 1:6 uses the same “sons of God” language and describes them coming together before YHWH.

Does that prove exactly what these beings were?

No.

But does it raise the possibility that the Hebrew Bible imagines a populated divine realm containing more than one heavenly being?

It certainly raises the question.

And Genesis 6 has one more surprise:

the Nephilim.

Genesis 1:26 gets very interesting when you slow down and look at the Hebrew.

The verse begins with a singular speaker.

Then it says:

“Let us make man in our image…”

Then the next verse shifts back again.

So the question is simple:

Who is “us”?

We all know Genesis 1:1:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

But the Hebrew underneath it is more interesting.

The word translated “God” is Elohim.

It is a plural-form noun.

But bara — “created” — is singular.

Does that prove many gods created the universe?

No.

But it does show that the original Hebrew carries more complexity than the simple English phrase “God created.”

And just a few verses later:

“Let US make mankind in OUR image.”

So who is the “us”?

For centuries, many ancient Gnostic voices were known primarily through the people who condemned them.

Then came Nag Hammadi.

Ancient writings spoke again.

And near Qumran, another completely different collection—the Jewish Dead Sea Scrolls—survived in caves while the world that produced them vanished.

We shouldn't blur those histories together.

But we should appreciate what they gave us:

voices that history almost lost.

You don't have to agree with them.

But today, unlike many people before us, you can actually read them...

Here's a distinction I think spiritual seekers should understand:

“Church authorities decided this”
and
“God decided this”

are not the same historical statement.

History can identify bishops, emperors, councils, popes, and inquisitors.

A believer can believe the Holy Spirit guided them.

But that's a theological conclusion—not something historical evidence itself can prove.

Know the history.

Then decide what it means to you.
