To keep children and families safe during extreme heat, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends strict hydration, finding air-conditioned shelter, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities.
Never leave children unattended in a parked car, as vehicle temperatures can rise to lethal levels in minutes.

HydrationWater is Best: Ensure children drink water frequently, even before they feel thirsty.
Infants: For babies under 6 months, rely on extra breast milk or formula—do not give them water.
Teens & Athletes: For strenuous exercise lasting longer than an hour, small amounts of sports drinks can help replenish electrolytes.

Sun & Heat ProtectionDress Smart: Dress children in a single layer of loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.

Cool Down: Use cool baths, water misters, or supervised water play to safely reduce body temperature.

Avoid Peak Sun: Limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours (typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Rest: Heat causes extreme fatigue. Allow ample rest and recovery time between any outdoor activities.

Indoor Safety & AcclimatizationAir Conditioning: Spend as much time as possible indoors with A/C. If your home lacks cooling, visit public libraries, shopping malls, or local community “cooling centers”.

Recognizing Heat Illness: Be vigilant for signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, headache, excessive fatigue, or a lack of urination. If a child shows severe symptoms like a high fever (104° F or higher), confusion, or vomiting, seek emergency medical care immediately.
