When you’re thinking about ways to , don’t forget about sleep! Not long ago, CCC Care Manager Sara learned that 87-year-old Gladys was sleeping in her recliner because getting in and out of bed had become too difficult. After talking it over, Sara and Gladys agreed that a mattress with an adjustable base could make her more comfortable and ease her osteoporosis and neuropathy symptoms for a better night’s rest.

One way to this is by staying active – and May is a perfect time to get outside! Here in Connecticut, we’re lucky to have many accessible trails that make it possible for people of all abilities to walk, ride, jog, or roll in the great outdoors.

CCC’s initiative the Connecticut Age Well Collaborative has recognized several trails – like the Farmington Canal Linear Park and trails at the Barnes Nature Center and Lake McDonough – as local picks in their annual Age Well Across CT list. This resource is a treasure trove of community-nominated places and programs that help make Connecticut a great place to age well. Check it out at https://ctagewellcollaborative.org/acrossct/

April is National Stress Awareness Month – and since nearly half of Americans experience significant daily stress, it’s a good time to recognize the stress in our lives and take action to tame it. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

✅ Take a breath.
To combat stress, try slowing down your breathing. One option is the 4-7-8 technique – inhale for four seconds, hold for seven, then exhale slowly for eight.

✅ Get moving.
Just 30 minutes of moderate intensity movement can increase your heart rate and trigger the release of endorphins, our bodies’ feel-good chemicals.

✅ Write it down.
Stress can materialize when we have a lot on our plates. Writing tasks down helps get them out of your brain, so they aren’t on a constant loop.

✅ Know when you need more help.
If you’re experiencing significant, long-term stress, talk to a therapist, social worker, or counselor.
