What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle, specialized hands-on technique that encourages the movement of lymph fluid and helps manage swelling and fluid buildup. It plays an important role in the management of lymphedema, a condition in which fluid accumulates in the tissues because the lymphatic system cannot drain it adequately.
When can MLD help?
Depending on the individual's needs and medical circumstances, MLD may be helpful for:
〰️ Cancer-related lymphedema: Managing swelling that can develop following cancer treatment, including treatment for breast, gynecological, prostate, and head and neck cancers.
〰️ Postoperative swelling: Helping manage swelling following procedures such as knee and hip replacements, plastic surgery, and reconstructive surgery.
〰️ Pregnancy-related swelling: Helping manage swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet.
〰️ Face and jaw concerns: Gentle lymphatic techniques help manage facial swelling and complement other approaches to jaw tension and TMJ-related symptoms.
〰️ Sinus congestion: Gentle lymphatic techniques around the face and neck help relieve facial congestion and support fluid drainage.
〰️ Gender-affirming surgery: MLD can help manage postoperative swelling and support recovery.
