RFA can provide longer-lasting relief for certain types of back pain when the facet joints are identified as the likely source. 💉
Usually, diagnostic medial branch blocks come first to temporarily numb the nerves carrying pain signals from those joints. If the blocks provide significant relief, RFA may be the next step. Using imaging guidance, a specialized needle is positioned near the targeted nerve and radiofrequency energy creates controlled heat to reduce its ability to transmit pain signals. Relief varies, but many patients may experience improvement for months. That window can be used to stay active, strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, improve mobility, and progress with physical therapy.
