Can I be honest? 💜

As an African American woman over 40,
I wasn’t sure I’d conceive naturally; let alone have the uncomplicated pregnancy or unmedicated birth I hoped for
BUT I DID

I prioritized my physical and mental health, gained less than 20 pounds during pregnancy, worked with a therapist, and trusted my body. When the time came, I welcomed my baby through an unmedicated birth.

I also had the support of my friend and business partner, Jeanelle, a Certified Nurse Midwife and member of the Cupid’s Handz team. Her guidance reinforced something I’ve always believed: every mother deserves a strong support system.

This experience allowed me to live out what I teach as a nurse, doula, and maternal health advocate.

Being a doula for Black women means more than support during birth. It means being a safe space in moments where Black mothers are too often unheard, dismissed, or expected to “just be strong.”

It’s holding hands through fear, advocating with love, protecting peace, and reminding women that they deserve to be cared for too.

Every Black mother deserves to feel seen, respected, informed, and empowered from pregnancy to postpartum. And being trusted with that journey? That’s the most beautiful part of this work. 🖤

Why do babies suck their thumbs? 👶🏽✨

Thumb sucking is a natural self-soothing reflex that can help babies feel calm, safe, and comforted. Many babies even start sucking their thumbs before they’re born! It’s one of the ways infants learn to regulate themselves during stressful, sleepy, or overstimulating moments. 🤍

✨ Pros of thumb sucking:
• Helps babies self-soothe and fall asleep
• Can provide comfort during stressful moments
• May help babies feel secure and relaxed
• A normal part of infant development

⚠️ Cons of prolonged thumb sucking:
• Can affect teeth and jaw development over time
• May cause skin irritation on the thumb
• Can become a difficult habit to break as children get older
• Increased germs if hands aren’t clean

Every child is different, and in many cases thumb sucking during infancy and toddlerhood is completely normal. 💛

The newborn stage can feel beautiful, emotional, exhausting, and overwhelming — sometimes all at once 🤍
