Ancient Song Ancient Song is a national birth justice organization.

We do this by ensuring that all pregnant, postpartum, and parenting people of color have access to high-quality, holistic doula care and services regardless of their ability to pay. We provide doula training and services, offer community education, and advocate for policy change to support reproductive and birth justice.

Despite passing legislation in 2009, a lack of enforcement means that many correctional facilities and staff do not comply, endangering the lives of incarcerated pregnant people and their children.

The implementation and enforcement gap means that the facilities and staff that operate within these loopholes are very rarely held accountable.

It is unacceptable that this practice continues due to a lack of compliance oversight and continues to endanger many of our state’s most vulnerable citizens.

REMINDER 📢 The Birth Institute's universal application is now open! ‼️

Ancient Song Doula Services is now accepting applications for the 2027 cohorts of the Birth Justice Institute (BJI) and the Birth Equity Taskforce.

Applicants may apply to one or both programs, as each plays a distinct but interconnected role in advancing intersectional, community-led birth justice across New York and New Jersey.

The 2027 Institute runs January–November 2027

A group of midwives in are suing the state over laws they say are blocking care providers and further contributing to maternity care deserts, a reality that over a third of the Georgia counties currently face.

Right now, the state does not allow direct-entry midwives (those without nursing degrees). These midwives with the support of argue this law is unconstitutional and is only worsening the maternal mortality rate in Georgia which is already one of the highest in the country.

Formerly known as the "Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act", the package of legislation has been renamed simply as the Momnibus Act and only mentions the word Black once. There is nothing wrong with addressing the maternal health crisis that disproportionately harms Black women.
