Our July Book of the Month is... The Amazing Generation by Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price, recommended by Small Brooklyn neuropsychologist Dr. Nav Gill.
📱 💭 📕
Dr. Nav says: "This book is an empowering guide written specifically for young people growing up in today's digital world. Building on many of the ideas explored in The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price translate research into a relatable and humorous format that speaks directly to kids and teens.
What I appreciate most about this book is that it doesn't simply tell young people to spend less time on their phones. Instead, it invites them to think critically about how technology shapes their attention, friendships, emotions, and daily lives. The book encourages readers to experiment with creating more balance, making room for real-world adventures, meaningful relationships, independence, and fun.
This book’s tone is curious and empowering, not preachy and fear-based. It helps young people understand that many of the challenges they experience online are not personal failures but understandable consequences of the technologies designed to capture and hold their attention.
I recommend this book for tweens, teens, and the adults who care about them. Reading it together can encourage thoughtful conversations about technology, mental health, and what it means to build a rich and fulfilling life both on and offline. The Amazing Generation offers a hopeful and practical roadmap for reclaiming connection, play, and freedom."

Our June Book of the Month is... Because We Are Bad by Lily Bailey, recommended by Small Brooklyn therapist Dr. Caroline Carberry.
📚📚📚
Dr. Caroline says: “Because We Are Bad is a moving memoir by Lily Bailey, offering an intimate look at what it's really like to live with OCD. Written from her own lived experience, Lily brings warmth and honesty to a condition often misunderstood or reduced to stereotypes about cleanliness and organization.
This book is a wonderful read for anyone who wants to better understand the inner world of OCD and approach it with more empathy. It challenges common misconceptions and opens the door to richer, more compassionate conversations about mental health and neurodivergence. Whether you're personally familiar with OCD or simply want to show up better for someone who is, Because We Are Bad is a meaningful and eye-opening place to start!”

Our May Book of the Month is... Avoiding Anxiety in Autistic Children, A Guide for Autistic Wellbeing by Luke Beardon, PhD. It is recommended by Small Brooklyn therapist Cecilia Barbosa, LCSW.
📚📚📚
Cecilia says: "Dr. Luke Beardon offers readers a roadmap to thoughtfully and intentionally support Autistic nervous systems. The book helps us better understand the mechanics of anxiety and the specific settings where Autistic children most often find themselves, emphasizing the critical importance of context regarding this universal emotion.
Dr. Beardon clearly outlines how anxiety manifests within communication, school, sensory profiles, and social life. Each of these areas is further broken down to promote a deeper understanding of and alignment with the Autistic experience. The book's bedrock principle, Autism + Environment = Outcome, provides a clear foundation for furthering our understanding of anxiety in Autistic individuals. It serves as a guide for identifying concrete actions adults can take to avoid and mitigate that anxiety, help children understand their own bodies and brains, and ultimately encourage self-advocacy and inner peace."

Our April Book of the Month is... Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD by Eli R. Lebowitz, PhD recommended by Small Brooklyn's Director of Parent Programs, Maddy Clark, LCSW.
📚📚📚
Maddy says: "What makes this book so impactful isn't just the advice, it’s the shift in perspective. Most traditional therapies for childhood anxiety focus on the child, but Dr. Eli Lebowitz’s SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) program focuses on the parents.
It addresses a fundamental truth: when children are distressed, our natural instinct is to protect them, often by accommodating their fears (like sleeping on their floor or answering the same reassurance-seeking questions a dozen times). While well-intended, these accommodations often inadvertently fuel the anxiety.
This book provides a compassionate, step-by-step roadmap for parents to reduce accommodations, provide high support, and regain control. It is an essential resource for any parent feeling controlled by their child’s anxiety, offering a way back to a more peaceful, functioning household. Keep an eye out for the picky eating specific edition, coming out this August!"

Upcoming webinar!

Understanding Learning Disorders: Tuesday, April 14th, 12-1pm

Many children struggle with reading, writing, or math at some point in school. But how do you know when a challenge reflects a true learning disorder rather than a temporary hurdle, attention difficulties, or differences in learning pace? Professionals may tell you to get a neuropsychological evaluation, but how does this help?

Dr. Danielle diFilipo and Dr. Amira Hanna will describe how learning disorders present in the classroom and at home, and they’ll outline how neuropsychological evaluations help identify students in need.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

- the basics of learning disorders in reading, writing, and math
- the differences between learning disorders and other kinds of difficulties
- how learning disorders are diagnosed through a neuropsychological evaluation
- how evaluations translate into practical recommendations for school and home

Overall, participants will better understand different kinds of learning needs and how to seek effective support. Danielle and Amira will answer questions from the audience at the end, moderated by Dr. Mandi White-Ajmani.

This webinar is held in partnership with Park Slope Parents! Registration is free for PSP members and $25 for non-members.
