ABA Word of the Week: Generalization

In ABA, the goal is not just learning a skill in one place with one person. The goal is helping that skill carry into everyday life.

Generalization means a child can use what they’ve learned across different people, places, and situations, whether they’re at home, at school, in the community, or with a new caregiver.

That’s when learning becomes more meaningful, more useful, and more connected to real life.

“My child can do it in therapy, but not at home.”

That’s exactly what generalization is for, turning skills practiced in ABA therapy into skills your child can use in real life.

In this blog, you’ll learn:

> What generalization in ABA therapy means, and why it matters
> The main types of generalization (stimulus, response, and maintenance)
> Simple ways families can support generalization at home through routines and consistent language

In this video, Amanda shares one of the most common mistakes BCBAs make early in their careers: getting overly rigid and trying to run the plan “exactly right.”

Growth happens when you shift from perfection to flexibility. The goal is still clinical integrity and consistency, but with real-time decision making that fits the person in front of you. A plan is a guide, not a script, and ethical ABA requires adjusting when the data, the learner, or the family context calls for it.

If you’re a newer BCBA, this is a great reminder that progress often comes from being willing to bend thoughtfully, problem-solve, and make the plan work in real life.

Summer break changes the rhythm of the day, and a simple routine reset can help it feel smoother and more predictable.

If the schedule shift feels big, a little planning can go a long way.

Here are a few easy tips to support transitions, routines, and fun summer days:

> Keep 2 daily anchors the same (wake-up and bedtime) to give the day structure.
> Use a simple 3-part plan: Morning, Afternoon, Evening. Write it on paper or a whiteboard so your child can see what’s next.
> Add a planned break every day (quiet corner, headphones, movement, sensory bin, or outside time).
> Use “First, Then” language for transitions: First sunscreen, then park. First snack, then screen time.
> Offer 2 choices to reduce overwhelm: “Pool or park?” “Inside play or outside play?”
> Start with shorter outings and build up as your child gets comfortable.

These small supports help routines feel clearer, transitions feel easier, and summer days feel more enjoyable for the whole family.

ABA Word of the Week: Independence

Independence in ABA is not about expecting a child to do everything perfectly right away, or leaving them to “figure it out.”

Independence is built step by step through teaching, support, and practice, so skills feel confident and usable in real life. That might look like communicating needs, building self-care routines, making choices, practicing community skills, and strengthening self-advocacy.

The goal is generalization, so these skills show up across different places and people, like home, school, and the community.

In this clip, Amanda shares a reminder every BCBA and Behavior Technician needs to hear: preference assessments are not a one-and-done task.

Motivation changes throughout the day, and the reinforcer that worked at the start of session might not work 20 minutes later. When responding starts to drop, one of the first things to check is whether the learner is still working for what’s being offered.

A few practical ways to apply this in ABA sessions:

> Run quick preference checks at the start of session and between targets
> Re-check when you see slower responding, more distraction, or less engagement
> Teach Behavior Technicians to do simple, frequent preference checks, not just rely on yesterday’s “favorite”
> Rotate options so the learner stays motivated and learning stays strong

Frequent preference assessments help keep sessions individualized, engaging, and effective.

ABA therapy vs speech therapy is a common question for parents, especially when a child has autism or communication delays. Both services can support development, but they focus on different skills and are often most effective when they work together as part of an early intervention or school support plan.

In this blog, we break down the difference between ABA therapy and speech therapy, what each provider works on, and how families can decide which service, or combination of services, best fits their child’s needs.
