🚨 WHOOPING COUGH IS HERE. AGAIN. 🚨
We have now seen another case of whooping cough (pertussis) in our community.
This is not “just a cough.”
Whooping cough can last 3 months or longer, causing relentless coughing fits that can leave children:
• Gasping for air
• Vomiting after coughing
• Struggling with low oxygen levels
• Exhausted and miserable for weeks to months
The complications can be devastating:
• Pneumonia
• Seizures
• Cracked ribs from severe coughing
• Burst blood vessels in the eyes
• Shock
• Kidney failure
• Death
The youngest babies are at the highest risk.
📊 About 1 in 3 infants under 1 year old who get whooping cough require hospitalization.
📊 Nearly 2 out of 3 babies under 6 months old who get it will be hospitalized.
And this isn’t happening somewhere else.
‼️It’s here. It’s in our community.‼️
The good news is that we have a safe and effective way to help protect children: vaccination.
If your child is behind on vaccines, now is the time to catch up. If you’re pregnant, make sure you’re up to date on your Tdap vaccine to help protect your newborn during those vulnerable first months of life.
Whooping cough doesn’t care if your child is supposed to start school next year, has a birthday party next weekend, or has never been seriously ill before.
Please don’t wait until your family is facing months of coughing, sleepless nights, emergency visits, or hospitalization to wish you had protected them sooner.
