🚨 WHOOPING COUGH IS HERE. AGAIN. 🚨

We have now seen another case of whooping cough (pertussis) in our community.

This is not “just a cough.”

Whooping cough can last 3 months or longer, causing relentless coughing fits that can leave children:
• Gasping for air
• Vomiting after coughing
• Struggling with low oxygen levels
• Exhausted and miserable for weeks to months

The complications can be devastating:
• Pneumonia
• Seizures
• Cracked ribs from severe coughing
• Burst blood vessels in the eyes
• Shock
• Kidney failure
• Death

The youngest babies are at the highest risk.

📊 About 1 in 3 infants under 1 year old who get whooping cough require hospitalization.
📊 Nearly 2 out of 3 babies under 6 months old who get it will be hospitalized.

And this isn’t happening somewhere else.

‼️It’s here. It’s in our community.‼️

The good news is that we have a safe and effective way to help protect children: vaccination.

If your child is behind on vaccines, now is the time to catch up. If you’re pregnant, make sure you’re up to date on your Tdap vaccine to help protect your newborn during those vulnerable first months of life.

Whooping cough doesn’t care if your child is supposed to start school next year, has a birthday party next weekend, or has never been seriously ill before.

Please don’t wait until your family is facing months of coughing, sleepless nights, emergency visits, or hospitalization to wish you had protected them sooner.

📞 Call us today if you have questions about the pertussis vaccine or need to schedule your child’s vaccines.

☀️🕶️ Summer Safety Tips for Parents 🏖️🍉

Summer is such a fun time for kids — but it also comes with a few extra safety reminders! Here are some quick tips from Sandbar Pediatrics to help keep your family safe this season:

☀️ Apply sunscreen often (SPF 30+ recommended) and reapply every 2 hours
💧 Encourage lots of water breaks to prevent dehydration
🚗 Never leave children unattended in a vehicle — even for a minute
🏊 Always supervise children around pools, lakes, and beaches
🦟 Use bug spray safely and check for ticks after outdoor play
🚲 Make sure helmets are worn for bikes, scooters, and skateboards
🍉 Keep healthy snacks and fluids handy during outings and sports
❤️ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or headache

We hope all of our Sandbar families have a safe, healthy, and fun summer!

💉 A Quick Reminder About the Tdap Vaccine 💉

With a recent case of whooping cough (pertussis) here in Glynn County, now is a great time to make sure your Tdap vaccine is up to date.

Tdap helps protect against:
✔️ Tetanus
✔️ Diphtheria
✔️ Pertussis (whooping cough)

Adults should receive a Tdap booster every 10 years. This is especially important for parents, grandparents, and anyone who will be around newborn babies, since infants are at the highest risk for severe illness from whooping cough.

Dr. Sandifer was due for his booster, so he rolled up his sleeve and got updated too! 👏

Dads of newborns — this is your reminder to check your vaccine status and make sure you’re protected before spending time with baby. ❤️

If you have questions about vaccines or your child’s immunization schedule, we are always happy to help!
