Age 72. Three reps. 125 pounds.

But that’s not where Pat’s story started...

She first came to Burlington PT in January 2023 because of persistent left knee pain that had been bothering her for months.

About a month into physical therapy, an X-ray confirmed tricompartmental osteoarthritis in her left knee.

For many people, that diagnosis feels like the end of the story.

“I have arthritis, so my knee is always going to hurt.”

But Pat’s story reminds us that’s simply not true.

A diagnosis can provide valuable information, but it doesn’t have to define what’s possible.

We discovered that improving her ankle mobility, restoring strength, and addressing the movement patterns contributing to her knee pain opened the door to so much more.

Within a couple of months, her knee pain had resolved, despite the arthritis still being there.

Instead of stopping there, we shifted our focus toward building long-term strength, capacity, and resilience.

Over the past few years, our monthly sessions have evolved with the seasons.

We help her prepare for dragonboat paddling, skiing, hiking, playing with her newest grandson, and all of the adventures in-between that she loves.

More recently, we’ve turned our attention to progressive resistance training and lifting heavy for bone health.

Today, at 72 years old, Pat tested her deadlift and lifted 125 pounds for 3 reps.

Not because she wanted to chase a number.

Because she wants to keep paddling. Keep skiing. Keep hiking. Keep up with her grandkids.

She wants to keep saying “yes” to the life she loves.

That’s what strength is for.

Pat, thank you for trusting us over the past few years. We can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes you 💙

(Oh, and we can’t wait to retest your deadlift in 6-8 weeks 😜)

We had a blast supporting the riders at the Women’s Cycling Collective Century Litha on June 20!

🍬 + 🦆 + 🐓 + 🚜 = a really great 🚴 SAG stop, apparently!

Seriously though, the tractor parade that went by was an unexpected treat 😂

We’re already looking forward to the next event!!

Unlock Your Squat Workshop went down Monday night with the hardworkers 💪

And we got into it!

Not all squat limitations are mobility issues, they can be control problems.

Pass mobility tests, but have trouble getting to depth under load?

Your body doesn’t like to use positions that it doesn’t trust 👀

We’re big fans of spending time in the bottom of your squat. It’s one thing to lift heavy, but can you OWN that bottom position? Some cultures eat meals while holding a squat…let that sink in and get comfy down there!

These folks were workin’ HARD last night at the Ready to RIDE class.

Who’s tried banded planks from the rig? Lower down to the bottom of a push up or your descending position on your mountain bike for a little extra 🌶️

The last class is next week and if the rain ever stops in VT we’ll be on the trails 🚵

Now —> Dec, 2023

This is Teddy. Yesterday he hit a post injury (pain-free!) back squat at 350lb.

In Dec 2023 he had lumbar disc herniations that were so severe that he had drop foot in his right leg accompanied by a sensation of a hot rod piercing into his calf. Fun 🥴

When you’re “in it” it feels like that badness is forever vs temporary. That doesn’t make it easy though!

No surgery. Just a plan, understanding of the process and journey ahead, and discipline to follow through.

Congrats on the PR, Teddy. Hope you made yourself proud! 💪

PS—if you’re wondering what Teddy has a particular knack for treating, um…it’s back pain 😅
