ALPHA Behavioral Health Center serves clients in three counties: ALPHA Center in Chesterfield and Kershaw counties and The Lee Center in Lee County. ALPHA Behavioral Health Center fully supports consumer rights. The agency staff makes every effort to assure every person is treated fairly. ALPHA Behavioral Health Center fully complies with the standard of ethics set forth by the National Associatio

Chesterfield County Opioid Abatement Director, Karen Short brought local leaders together to discuss the deep connection between mental health and substance use. A key takeaway from Tri-County's Clinical Services Chief Miranda Bailey was clear: recovery requires addressing the whole picture. Treating only one piece of a co-occurring disorder leaves the puzzle incomplete.

𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗲 & 𝗞𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗮𝘄 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀!

We want to thank our community collaborative coalitions, IMPACT Kershaw County and Lee County RLI/Interagency Coalition for having ALPHA Behavioral Health Center and our own Opioid Abatement Coalition Director, LeAnna Adams as a host and presenter this week.

We had great discussions about the services provided here at ALPHA, the ongoing efforts of both Kershaw and Lee County Opioid Abatement Coalitions, and our strategic focus for 2026.

A major topic of conversation during these sessions was the rise of emerging substance trends. Specifically, unregulated products that are increasingly showing up in local v**e stores and gas station.

Objective education and awareness are some of our strongest tools for prevention, so we wanted to share a few important takeaways from our discussion:

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀?

𝗞𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗺 is a plant native to Southeast Asia. While it can act as a stimulant in low doses, it behaves like an opioid in high doses.

𝟳-𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘅𝘆𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗴𝘆𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 (𝟳-𝗢𝗛) is an active compound found within kratom. It is significantly more potent at opioid receptors than the plant’s primary alkaloid. Even in small amounts, 7-OH can strongly contribute to kratom’s sedative and addictive effects.

𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲.

Thank you for your dedication to students and for allowing ALPHA Behavioral Health Center’s Prevention Team to partner with Lugoff-Elgin Middle School for more than a year to implement the Too Good for Drugs substance misuse prevention program in your classroom.
