Somewhere in North County right now, a two-year-old is refusing a banana because it broke in half.

The early years ask so much of parents. Sleep that never quite arrives. Dinners that endless negotiations. A meltdown in the Trader Joe’s parking lot, then again in the frozen food aisle. Most of the advice out there is generic, contradictory, or both. We want to help.

Parenting the Early Years is a free, in-person three-part seminar series for parents and caregivers of kids ages 1 to 5, in collaboration with McCammack Pediatrics. Each morning pairs a child psychologist, Dr. Julieta Aguilera Rice, with a pediatrician, Dr. Brad McCammack, so you get the body and the behavior side of the same question in one room.

📅 Mondays, 10:00 to 11:30 am, in Carlsbad
Nov 2: Sleep, routines, and regressions
Nov 9: Food, picky eating, and dinner-table standoffs
Nov 16: Tantrums, big feelings, and screen time

Come to one morning or all three. Little ones are welcome. Seats are capped at 20 per session so there’s real time for your questions.

"When does this stop?"

Dr. Julieta Aguilera Rice says people ask her some version of this in almost every first grief session. Her honest answer is that the question rests on a picture of grief that's probably wrong. We grow up thinking grief drains away with time. For most people, it doesn't. The grief stays about the same size, and the life around it slowly gets bigger.

Her new essay on Undercurrent, Grief Doesn't Go Away. You Grow Around It., covers what that looks like and what actually helps: https://coastaltherapygroup.com/undercurrent/growing-around-grief/

Dr. Aguilera Rice is also starting an in-person grief support group in Carlsbad Village. The first session is Thursday, October 8, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM, and it meets weekly on Thursdays after that. The group is small, three to eight people, led by a psychologist, and $80 a session. There's a particular relief in being with people who don't need anything explained.

Spots are limited. Reserve yours here: https://coastaltherapygroup.com/grief-therapy-group/

How do we talk with our kids about race, culture, and identity, without letting our own discomfort get in the way?

In this episode of Where Did Your Mind Just Go?, Gabe Lowe sits down with Dr. Anjali Ferguson | Culturally-Responsive Psychologist , clinical psychologist, TEDx speaker, children’s book author, and founder of Parenting Culture.

Drawing from their own experiences with race, culture, identity, and parenting, they talk about helping kids understand difference, building pride and belonging, and accepting that parents won’t always have the perfect words.

🎙️ A thoughtful one for parents, therapists, and anyone wondering how we help the next generation make sense of the world around them.

Grief is typically associated with the Kübler-Ross model, "The Five Stages of Grief", but in truth, grief is far more complex and deeply layered. Sometimes it's sharp, overwhelming, and disruptive. Sometimes it's dull, distant, and saps you of your energy. Often, it goes beyond words.
Dr. Aguilera Rice is one of our many clinicians who specialize in grief therapy. She shares her thoughts on what part of grief is most commonly misunderstood.

If you are considering seeking support, we encourage you to visit our website www.coastaltherapygroup.com to to find out more and schedule a consultation. 🩵

Being able to formulate a sense of identity can take months, years, or even a lifetime to develop. So when a loved one approaches you and opens up about their journey, it is natural to feel uncertain about how to respond properly.
The most important things you can do are to listen without judgment, offer unconditional love and support, and ask directly how you can help. 💛
