As kids go back to school, homeowners can be a help to pedestrians of all ages by ensuring that hoses and other trip hazards are not left on sidewalks. In addition, shrubs near driveways and intersections can be trimmed back to enhance visibility. Finally, as leaves fall, frequent cleanup makes walkways safer, as leaves can become slick when wet. Vivian Rooks Newborn Smith

Mrs. Vivian Rooks Newborn Smith, age 78, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

Mrs. Smith was born on October 27, 1947, daughter of the late W. Curtis Rooks and Lois Carlon Boyd Rooks. She was a graduate of Central High School, Class of 1965.

Vivian dedicated 30 years of service as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service before her retirement. She was a faithful member of Ephesus Christian Church, where she lovingly served as treasurer for an incredible 55 years. Always willing to serve others, Vivian was also an Avon Representative and Team Leader. She helped start and volunteered with the Clem Fire Department, Station 5, where she served as secretary and often rode alongside her husband.

Vivian enjoyed spending time at the beach, traveling, laughing, Nascar and, most of all, being with her family. She will be remembered for her faithful service, her love of family, and the joy she brought to those who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Autrey Smith; sons and daughter-in-law, Craig Newborn and Kevin and Necoille Newborn; grandchildren and their spouses, Emily and James Hitchcock, Victoria and Caleb Vaughn, Jake and Mackenzie Newborn, and Dusty Smith; great-grandchildren, Evelyn Hitchcock and Kohen Newborn; and brother, Myron Rooks.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, J.C. Newborn, and her brother, Dennis Rooks.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 3:30 PM from the Chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Min. Tim Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Ephesus Christian Church Cemetery with Min J.C. Cook officiating. Richie Montgomery, Jake Newborn, Dusty Smith, Caleb Vaughn, James Hitchcock, and Randy Shoemake will serve as pallbearers. Johnny Harper will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Josephine "Jo" W. Banister

Mrs. Josephine “Jo” Weaver Banister, age 92, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2026.

Mrs. Banister was born in Hart County, Georgia on August 19, 1934, the daughter of the late James Bode Weaver and Lula Hilley Weaver.

Jo devoted her life to her home and family. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, she found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. Her life was centered around her family, and the love and devotion she shared with them will remain a treasured part of her legacy.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jeff Bishop; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Connie Banister; grandchildren, Lisa and Jason Gauden and Chris and Brittany Banister; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Kendall, Alyssa, Dylan, and Hazel; and brother-in-law, Grady Banister.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chaffer Banister; brothers, Frank Weaver, William Weaver, Joe Weaver, J.B. Weaver, Jr., Thomas Weaver, and Clinton Weaver; and sister, Mozelle Vickery.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 4:30 PM until 6:00 PM.

A funeral service will follow at 6:00 PM in the Almon Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Bishop officiating.

A private family interment will be held Tuesday at Carroll Memory Gardens.

Watson Eugene Hester

Mr. Watson Eugene Hester, age 90, of Winston, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026.

Watson was born on December 31, 1935, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Watson James Hester and Myrtis Hamrick Hester.

He was a hardworking man who was never one to be idle. A skilled brick mason for many years, he continued laying bricks for family and friends even after retirement and well into his 80s. His strong work ethic and willingness to lend a helping hand were simply part of who he was. He was also a member of Alpharetta Masonic Lodge.

He had a lifelong love of racing and never missed a NASCAR race, whether watching it on television or listening on the radio. His passion for motorsports extended beyond being a fan, as he began dirt track racing when his youngest child was still in diapers and continued racing for many years. He and Caroleen were also longtime members of a camping club, where they enjoyed making memories and sharing good times with friends.

Watson also enjoyed working on and collecting antique cars, appreciating the craftsmanship and history of each vehicle. As a child, he made history of his own when he became the first child to receive an experimental injection of penicillin for rheumatic fever at Grady Hospital, where his name was recorded in the hospital as Bubba “Bubber.”

Watson will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Anita Morgan; his son, Johnny Hester; his grandchildren; his great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

Besides his parents, Watson was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Caroleen Maggie Sue Hester; his son Michael Eugene Hester, and his daughter Eugenia Ann Hester.

Watson lived a long and meaningful life, leaving behind memories that will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

No formal funeral services are planned at this time. The family appreciates the love, and support shown to them during this time of loss.

Cathy Louise Mourey

Cathie Louise Mourey, age 75, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Villa Rica, Georgia. Cathie, affectionately known as “Memaw,” was well-known for her love of arts and crafts and for adding her own unique, personal flair to everything she touched.

Cathie was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on July 3, 1951, to the late Luther and Evelyn Davis. At the age of five, she was adopted by the late Harold and Julia Spriggs and grew up alongside her biological sister, Clara, in a loving home in Forest Park, Georgia. Cathie and Clara were fortunate to remain connected with their biological siblings throughout their lives, preserving family bonds that remained meaningful to Cathie.

Cathie married the love of her life, John Francis Mourey, on November 22, 1965. For nearly 61 years, they built a life together filled with love, family, and devotion to one another. Their marriage stood the test of time, and the life they shared was a beautiful example of lasting love and commitment. Through every season of life, John remained by her side, and the love they shared was at the heart of the family they built together.

Cathie worked in customer service for Curtin Matheson Scientific for 10 years, where her warm personality and gift for connecting with others served her well.

Later in life, Cathie found another way to share her creativity and love for people by volunteering as Activities Director at The Oaks in Carrollton. There, she was able to spend her time doing something she truly loved—bringing people together through arts, crafts, activities, and creativity.

Her talents extended far beyond her volunteer work. Since 2005, Cathie handmade hundreds of what she called “Forever Bears,” carefully transforming clothing belonging to loved ones into keepsake bears for families to treasure. Each bear was uniquely made, giving families a tangible reminder of someone they loved and reflecting Cathie’s special gift for creating something deeply personal with her own hands. Whether she was sewing, crafting, decorating, or dreaming up her next project, Cathie poured a little piece of herself into everything she created.

Her Catholic faith was an important part of her life. Cathie volunteered at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Lithia Springs and was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Carrollton.

Above all, Cathie’s greatest joy was her family. As “Memaw,” she created countless memories with those she loved. Her creativity, personality, and one-of-a-kind spirit could be seen throughout her home, her crafts, her celebrations, and the many special things she made for the people around her.

Cathie is survived by her beloved husband, John Mourey; daughter, Angela Louise Bourque (James); granddaughters, Samantha Bourque Tucker (Brandon) and Amanda Leigh Meyer (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Knox Curtis Meyer, Nora Kate Tucker, Blake Louise Meyer, John Clifton Tucker, and Stetson Thomas Meyer; and siblings, Clara Croft, Luther Bright, Brenda Salsman, and MaryAnn Folds.

She was preceded in death by her biological parents, Luther and Evelyn Davis, and her adoptive parents, Harold and Julia Spriggs.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Joe Wagner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Carrollton, Georgia, on Monday, August 24, 2026, at 10:30 AM, with interment to follow at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has designated St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for memorial contributions.

Gregory Ralph Roberts

Greg Roberts, age 63 of Carrollton, Georgia died unexpectedly on Monday, August 10, 2026.

Greg was born on May 26, 1963 in Chicopee ,MA. He was the son of the late Norman and Patricia Roberts

He was a graduate of Carrollton High School where he played on the boys basketball team Greg had various careers including restaurant management, tire sales, and automotive management. He spent the last several years serving as primary care giver for his mother Patrica while also working as a cook at Billy Bobs restaurant in Carrollton.

Greg is survived by his daughters Amanda Roberts, Stephanie Roberts, Rebecca Wallach(LeAnne); his grandson Jude Norman Byer and his brother Matt Roberts

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Mike Roberts.

The family will receive friends from 10AM until 11AM on August 29 at Almon Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11AM in the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Wimberly officiating.

Sharon Tyree Hubbard

Sharon Tyree Hubbard, age 69, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026. A lifelong Carrollton resident, Sharon built a life centered around family, friendship, and the simple joys that made life special.

Sharon spent the early part of her working life in various retail positions before finding her true career with the Carroll County School System. Over the years, she worked at several schools and formed lifelong friendships with the people she met along the way. She was known not only for her amazing work ethic, but for the genuine connections she made with others.

Outside of work, Sharon had a gift for making people feel at home. She was an amazing host and decorator, and she especially loved making the holidays beautiful. Christmas was one of her favorite times of year. She also loved the beach, taking on DIY projects, and enjoying movie days with her brother, Stan.

But above all else, Sharon treasured her family. She was a devoted mother to her only daughter, Abbey Cole Johnson, and son-in-law, Wes Johnson. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother to Shepard and Olive Johnson, whom she adored beyond words.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Ed Hubbard; her daughter and son-in-law, Abbey and Wes Johnson; her beloved grandchildren, Shepard and Olive Johnson; and her brother, Stan Tyree. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the many people whose lives she touched throughout her years in Carrollton.

Sharon leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship and family—a home she made beautiful, holidays she made memorable, and countless moments that will be cherished forever.
