What happens when behavior change programming meets youth where they already are?
Alameda County Probation is showing what that can look like with Atlas.
In this video, Alameda County staff and youth share how Atlas is changing the experience of cognitive behavioral interventions inside their juvenile facility.

Instead of relying only on paper Journals, Atlas gives youth a more interactive way to:
🔹 Reflect on their experiences and emotions
🔹 Better understand behavior change concepts
🔹 Work through Journals at their own pace
🔹 Prepare for success back in the community
For one youth, the difference was simple: the digital format made the material “easier and more clear” to understand.

Technology can create access. Implementation is what creates change.
At the American Probation and Parole Association 51st Annual Training Institute, Albert Bañuelos, Deputy Director, Richard Valle, Assistant Superintendent, from the Alameda County Probation Department, and Kyle Athans from The Change Companies shared how to turn digital cognitive behavioral interventions into part of everyday practice for justice-involved youth.

The county’s approach goes beyond simply putting programming on a tablet. It connects Atlas to case plans, staff responsibilities, incentives, progress monitoring and the daily rhythm of the facility.
And early engagement is growing:
📈 416 hours of programming completed in July
📈 89 Journals completed in one month
📈 Up from 136 hours and 18 Journals in June

For juvenile justice agencies exploring digital programming, Alameda County’s experience offers a valuable takeaway. Read the blog below to see how Alameda County implemented Atlas!

What helps people move beyond understanding trauma toward greater emotional freedom?
In our latest Tips & Topics, David Mee-Lee, M.D., explores a practical framework built around four stages:
🔘 Awareness — Recognize triggers and automatic trauma responses.
🔘 Attending — Practice more intentional ways of responding.
🔘 Agency — Strengthen choice, confidence and personal autonomy.
🔘 Allowing — Create space for safety, connection, serenity and joy.

For helping professionals, Dr. Mee-Lee emphasizes an important distinction: understanding past trauma is necessary, but lasting change also requires helping people build new responses in the present.

Readiness to change doesn’t wait for a classroom seat to open.
That insight helped New Mexico Corrections Department rethink how residents access evidence-based programming.

With Atlas, programming became available across facilities and custody levels—without relying solely on traditional classroom schedules.
The impact:
📈 2.3x more people enrolled
📈 4x greater engagement
📈 87% completion among active users
From peer tech teachers to resident-led groups, NMCD also found that expanding access works best when people and technology work together.
