Earlier this quarter, we explored how AI is changing the corrections landscape. This post takes that conversation one step further into one of the highest-need areas in the justice system.

Substance use disorders affect roughly 65% of incarcerated individuals. RSAT funding exists to address this directly. But for many agencies, the real challenge is implementation: how do you expand evidence-based treatment when staff bandwidth is limited and waitlists are growing?

This new piece walks through how tablet-based treatment tools — when paired with therapeutic community models like RDAP, can increase treatment dosage, support individualized care, and help agencies get more from every RSAT dollar. It's not about replacing counselors. It's about making their work reach further.

What happens when 60% of people who need mental health care in jail never receive it?
Higher recidivism. Harder reentry. Communities that absorb the cost.

The stats in correctional settings are stark, 27% diagnosed with depression, nearly half with a substance use disorder, and over 90% who've experienced trauma. Traditional care can't reach everyone. But evidence-based digital programming can.

Digital tools grounded in CBT are filling that gap, and the outcomes are real.
In Utah's DOC, 81% of participants said programming helped them work toward their treatment goals. In a self-directed jail setting, recidivism dropped 15%. When support becomes accessible, transformation becomes achievable.

Excited to share that Securus Technologies, one of our tablet partners, recently featured Atlas by The Change Companies in a new press release highlighting digital reentry programming in the Washington DOC.

For facilities operating with lean staffing and growing programming demands, Atlas helps fill a critical gap by enabling individuals to complete structured, evidence-based reentry programming independently, without requiring a facilitator in the room. Early Washington DOC results showed:
➡️ 4,000+ participants engaged
➡️ Nearly 100 journaling topics accessed
➡️ 18,240 sessions completed
➡️ 5,780 hours of engagement
Atlas helps correctional agencies expand meaningful programming, improve engagement, and support reentry outcomes.
