Let’s not forget……

Friendly Friday Reminder :)

Obstetrics did not appear out of nowhere. It grew from the knowledge, skills, and practices of midwives who attended births for generations before the medical profession became involved in childbirth.

Understanding this history matters. It reminds us that midwifery is not an alternative to obstetrics. Midwifery is the original profession of birth care, with a rich body of knowledge that helped shape modern maternity care.

This is so true. I have had a lot of babies over the years with a nechal cord and hand at the same time and no issues. When properly managed, it doesn’t have to be an issue.

1 out of 3 babies are born with a nuchal cord.

A nuchal cord is common, usually harmless, and is rarely the sole cause of a baby's distress or death. Most babies with a cord around their neck are born healthy.

“I’m just gonna” is NOT informed consent.

“I’m just gonna check your cervix”
“I’m just gonna move you”
“I’m just gonna start pitocin”

Informed consent is very important during labor and delivery and phrases like “I’m just gonna” violate your bodily autonomy.

What is informed consent?
To make a full informed decision and give informed consent you must be given the full risks, full benefits and alternatives to whatever they’re suggesting. It is important to know you have rights as a patient and one of those rights is to be educated of your options and be able to accept or decline.

Remember that you even have the right to decline life saving measures. I recommend every person who is about to give birth to read the birthing persons bill of rights. Here in the US, your rights as a patient are federally protected.

Great question.

Great question.

Monday Funday :)

Many like to say that our mamas are older and not very healthy these days which make them 'high risk'.

Others say that birth has become way to medicalized and putting the mamas in this 'high risk' category.

What do you think?

Most home birth midwives will tell you — babies don’t follow calendars.

The majority of home births happen after 40 weeks, because normal pregnancy length varies and the body knows when it’s ready.

The “due date” isn’t an expiration date; it’s just an estimate.

Yep but we continue to induce at 39-40 weeks gestation 😒

Most babies just need a little more time.
