We’re proud to congratulate the team at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Central Pa. for once again earning the highest possible three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for adult cardiac surgery outcomes and patient care.

The UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute received three-star ratings in coronary artery bypass grafting, mitral valve replacement and repair, and multi-procedural cardiac surgery measures—placing the program among the top cardiac surgery centers in North America. This distinction reflects a decade of sustained excellence and a commitment to delivering exceptional outcomes for the patients and communities we serve.

For 72-year-old York resident Wanda Ashby, staying active has always been part of who she is. Zumba classes, strength training, swimming, and time at the gym weren't hobbies, they were her lifestyle.

But after climbing out of her pool one day, Wanda noticed pain shooting from her hips down the backs of her legs. What started as a nagging ache gradually became debilitating. Despite trying physical therapy, chiropractic care and over-the-counter medications, the pain only worsened, making even everyday moments — like walking to her grandson's baseball games or traveling with family — increasingly difficult.

After months of conservative treatment, Wanda met with Bryan Bolinger, DO, UPMC Spine Care, who diagnosed her with spinal stenosis and lumbar spondylolisthesis. Together, they decided surgery offered the best path back to the life she loved.

Following spine surgery at UPMC, Wanda says she noticed relief almost immediately.

"It was miraculous how immediate the relief was," she said. "The pain down the back of my legs was gone."

After months of recovery, physical therapy and dedication, Wanda is back doing what she loves most — Zumba, weightlifting and hiking with her husband in the mountains of North Carolina.

"Spine surgery took away all my pain," Wanda said. "I'm looking forward to making pain-free memories with my family and friends again."

Girls on the Run Midstate Summer Camp participants got a hands-on look at health care careers during a special visit to UPMC!

The group spent time in our resident skills lab, where they practiced surgical skills through interactive learning stations before showing off their creativity by making colorful coasters.

We also appreciate the many UPMC team members who volunteered their time to make the day a success, including staff from our physician liaison team, Veteran Services, CARES, and our residents.

We are excited to introduce Maria C. Castello Ramirez, MD, vascular surgeon at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, to the community!

Growing up in Colombia, Dr. Castello saw firsthand how difficult it can be to access high-quality health care. Those experiences inspired her to pursue a career in medicine and dedicate her life to helping others.

Dr. Castello chose vascular surgery because it allows her to make a meaningful difference in her patients' lives. She enjoys the challenge of treating complex vascular conditions, knowing that every patient and every case is unique. For her, one of the most rewarding moments is seeing patients return after surgery feeling healthier, stronger, and able to enjoy life more fully.

"My patients remind me of my own family members, and I care for each of them with compassion and respect," says Dr. Castello.

Dr. Castello values the relationship she builds with her patients and their families. Fluent in Spanish, she can communicate directly with Spanish-speaking patients, helping them feel informed, comfortable, and supported throughout their care. She understands that facing surgery can be stressful and overwhelming, and she is committed to guiding patients through every step of their journey — from diagnosis and treatment to recovery and beyond.

When she's not caring for patients, Dr. Castello enjoys spending time with her husband and their three children. Together, they love trying new recipes, traveling to the beach, watching baseball, and playing Monopoly.

Today, we join our community in mourning the loss of Jim Grandon, whose vision, generosity, and leadership helped shape the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation and strengthen healthcare across Central Pennsylvania.

As a Foundation Board member, Board Chair, and Board Emeritus member, Jim believed deeply in the power of philanthropy to improve lives. Together with his wife, Jean, he championed transformative initiatives, supported groundbreaking campaigns, and envisioned what would become the Leading the Way: Grandon Spring Symposium, a lasting legacy that continues to educate, inspire, and advance healthcare in our region.

More than his accomplishments, Jim will be remembered for his kindness, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to serving others. His impact lives on through the Foundation he helped build, the leaders he inspired, and the countless patients and families whose lives have been touched by his generosity.
We are profoundly grateful for Jim's friendship, leadership, and extraordinary legacy.

Our heartfelt condolences are with Jean, the Grandon family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Meet Hannah Swarr, FNP-C, MSN ☀️

For Hannah, the best part of being a primary care provider is the people she meets along the way. She loves getting to know her patients, hearing their stories, and supporting them through life's ups and downs. "Life is a journey," Hannah says, "and I feel honored that people allow me to come alongside them in their journey."

When she's not caring for patients at UPMC College Avenue Family Medicine in Lancaster, you'll likely find Hannah spending time outdoors with family and friends. Whether she's hiking, biking, gardening, traveling, playing sports, or simply relaxing outside and enjoying a conversation, she loves making the most of every day.

And if you're wondering whether she's a morning person or a night owl? Hannah proudly admits she's more of a morning person—although she'd really describe herself as a "mid-day person." One thing's for sure: don't expect her to stay up much past 9 p.m. these days! 😊

UPMC Hanover recently celebrated the unveiling of The Healer's Touch, a new statue in the hospital's Nursing Garden that honors the spirit of compassionate nursing care. The addition of the statue was made possible by the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation thanks to donors to Give Local York.

Created from an idea championed by UPMC Hanover's nursing staff, the garden provides a peaceful outdoor retreat where team members can step away, connect with nature, and recharge. Many of the nurses also help care for the garden themselves, making it a truly special place built by and for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

Special thanks to the Hanover Hospital Foundation for funding this meaningful project and helping bring this vision to life.

UPMC Harrisburg was recently named a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association.

This is their highest level of stroke care certification and recognizes UPMC for its ability to receive and treat patients with the most severe cases of stroke in central Pennsylvania.

Brandon Wattai, MBA, EMT-P, program director of the UPMC Stroke Institute in Central Pa., spoke with Good Day PA about what the designation means for residents of the central Pennsylvania region.

Katie Hershey, CRNP, recently joined the UPMC Primary Care team in Chambersburg and is very excited to give back to the community she grew up in.

"I chose a career in family medicine because I love seeing patients of all ages! From infants to people at the end of life, I am here through it all. I love coming to work and getting to experience the different ages and health concerns that family medicine brings. I especially enjoy taking care of patients with concerns that no one can quite figure out—it's like putting together pieces of a puzzle!"

In her free time, Katie enjoys spending time outside with her husband, Luke. Whether that’s reading a book under a tree, going on a hike, or swimming, you can always find her soaking up the sun (with lots of sunscreen on, of course).

"I like to think I'm a morning person, but not a 5 a.m. morning person—more like a 7 a.m. morning person. I roll out of bed and immediately eat a bowl of Cheerios to get my day started. Coffee? No, thank you. I run off carbs and adrenaline (and occasionally a cup of green tea)."
