Ticks are common in forested, brushy, leafy, and grassy areas. In some cases, you can avoid tick hideouts by staying in the center of a hiking trail, for example. Because this isn’t always possible, ensure you’re protected before hiking, camping, or gardening in an overgrown area.

Debra Picciotti has always valued her independence. At 75, she enjoys living on her own, tending to her garden, and spending time knitting.

That independence was suddenly challenged on Mother’s Day 2025. While visiting a cemetery to place flowers on her mother’s grave, Debra was walking on uneven ground when she lost her balance and fell. She landed on her previously replaced left knee, fracturing her left femur.

After being referred to orthopaedic trauma surgeon Matthew Garner, MD, Debra learned there was a path forward that would allow her to regain mobility sooner than she expected. Following surgery at UPMC West Shore, she was able to bear weight on her injured leg the very next day.

After three days of recovery, Debra was transferred to Helen M. Simpson Rehabilitation Hospital, which had recently opened at UPMC West Shore. During her two-week stay, she participated in physical therapy focused on strengthening her legs and improving her balance.

Throughout her recovery, Debra was grateful for the care she received.

"I love UPMC because I’ve never had a problem," she says. "Everybody has been so kind and caring that it’s a pleasure to go there, if you have to."

More than a year has passed since her surgery, and Debra describes her life as "excellent."

"I can go wherever I want and do whatever I want, without a cane, walker, or anything," she says. "I don’t have any pain."

In addition to being thankful for the outcome of her surgery, Debra says the connection she built with Dr. Garner made a lasting impression.

"It’s just his personality," she says. "He doesn’t act like a doctor. He doesn’t come in wearing a white coat and act stiff. He just talks to you like a human being, like you’re talking to your brother or something.

"We just got along wonderfully."

Did you know that UPMC Lititz offers a collaborative, team-based approach to breast cancer care?

Meet two of our experienced surgeons who work together to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes.

Abby Geletzke, MD, breast surgeon, helps patients understand their diagnosis and develops personalized treatment plans that align with their medical needs and personal goals.

Bryan Cicuto, DO, plastic surgeon, provides breast reconstruction following mastectomy to help restore a patient's natural shape, appearance, and confidence.

For nearly a decade, Drs. Geletzke and Cicuto have combined their expertise to provide comprehensive breast care. Many patients meet with both providers during the treatment planning process, giving them a better understanding of their options and allowing for coordinated care from diagnosis through reconstruction.

"Dr. Cicuto is a key part of delivering comprehensive care for many patients," said Dr. Geletzke. "He is exceptionally skilled and thoughtful in his work, with a strong aesthetic sense that benefits our patients tremendously."

"Dr. Geletzke's effective treatment plans and technical skills allow me to confidently complete reconstructive surgery," said Dr. Cicuto. "Details matter when performing complex cases, and having a breast surgeon as dedicated as she is leads to better outcomes."

Heart disease runs in Denise’s family. Throughout her life, she has experienced high blood pressure and a stent placement a decade ago to repair a blockage.

A few years ago, she started experiencing shortness of breath. Denise made an appointment at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC Memorial, where the team discovered she had another blockage. This led to another stent placement.

Feeling much better, Denise and her husband, Roger, took a two-week cruise to Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. However, during the cruise, the shortness of breath and chest pain returned. When she got home, she scheduled a follow-up appointment with the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. The team found six blockages, so Denise underwent coronary artery bypass grafting, also known as CABG. CABG involves rerouting blood flow around blockages using blood vessels from other parts of the body.

The UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Central Pa. was recently awarded the highest possible rating of three stars by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for coronary artery bypass grafting and two other advanced cardiac surgery procedures.

Denise is a clear example of what these top patient outcomes mean for our patients. Today, she is back to doing what she loves, including planning more trips with her husband.
“I’m spending a little more time just enjoying life.”
