Thank you to Ji Hoon Shin, MD, for visiting UVA Radiology and Medical Imaging and presenting last week's Grand Rounds lecture, "Sclerotherapy for Ovarian Endometrioma."

It was a privilege to welcome Dr. Shin back to UVA. Sixteen years ago, he completed a sabbatical year with our department. Today, he serves as President of the Korean Society of Interventional Radiology and Professor of Radiology at Asan Medical Center, the largest hospital in Korea.

His visit reflects a long-standing academic partnership that has connected UVA Radiology with interventional radiology colleagues in Korea for more than a decade through education, mentorship, and collaboration.

Thank you, Dr. Shin, for sharing your expertise and for helping strengthen the international relationships that continue to enrich our department.

Join UVA Radiology and Medical Imaging for Grand Rounds on May 28 featuring Ji Hoon Shin, MD, Professor of Radiology at Asan Medical Center and the University of Ulsan College of Medicine in the Republic of Korea.

Dr. Shin’s visit represents a meaningful continuation of a long-standing relationship between UVA and interventional radiology colleagues in Korea. Sixteen years ago, Dr. Shin completed a sabbatical year at UVA, helping establish an enduring academic and educational collaboration between our institutions.

Today, Dr. Shin serves as Professor of Radiology at Asan Medical Center — the largest hospital in Korea — and is President of the Korean Society of Interventional Radiology.

Since Dr. Shin’s time at UVA, more than 10 interventional radiologists from Korea have completed sabbatical training within our department, fostering years of continued international collaboration, education, and mentorship.

Earlier this year, UVA Radiology faculty and residents also traveled to Seoul to participate in an international interventional radiology educational course alongside colleagues in Korea.

Groundbreaking research at UVA is helping advance care for patients with chronic lymphatic diseases.

Rachelle Crescenzi, PhD, has secured a $6.5 million NIH grant to lead a seven-year research program focused on developing innovative MRI technologies for lymphedema and lipedema.

Her team’s SALT MRI technology offers a noninvasive way to visualize sodium, adipose tissue, and lymphatic function — creating new opportunities for earlier diagnosis, personalized treatment, and improved patient outcomes.

The work brings together experts across UVA’s Departments of Radiology and Medical Imaging and Plastic Surgery while also creating valuable training opportunities for future researchers.

Congratulations to Dr. Crescenzi and the SALT Lab team on this exciting milestone in translational imaging research.

Hear from one of our researchers, Jaime Mata, PhD, about how hyperpolarized xenon MRI is helping advance lung imaging, treatment evaluation, and patient care at UVA Radiology!

UVA researchers were the first in the world to acquire human lung images using this MRI technique. Today, the technology is FDA approved and used around the world to better understand lung function and support the development of new treatments.
