Juneteenth is a reminder that progress is possible because of the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of those who came before us.

As a Black woman in medicine, I do not take for granted the opportunity to care for patients, advocate for others, and practice in a field where generations before me fought to be seen and heard.

Today, I am reflecting with gratitude, honoring the past, and looking toward the future with hope.

This patient presented with a U cup, neck and back pain, shoulder grooving from her bra straps, and skin irritation beneath her breasts. Her goal was to be a DD cup while maintaining fullness.

Despite muscle relaxants, NSAIDs, and physical therapy, her symptoms never improved. I removed 1862g (4.1 lbs) from the right breast and 1516g (3.3 lbs) from the left breast. Now, just 3 months after surgery, she’s thrilled with the relief of her pain and the breast volume we were able to maintain.

This clip really resonated with me.

As a surgeon, I see patients every day who are making major decisions to improve their health, quality of life, confidence, or relieve physical pain. Those decisions deserve support, not resistance.

One thing I’ve learned is that when people start making changes for themselves, it can sometimes reveal who is truly in their corner.

Your health matters. Your goals matter. And the decisions you make about your own body should always be yours.
