Today, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Jose Lugarda, who joined The Selfhelp Home team as a Transportation Driver in June 2024.

Jose is someone residents and staff know they can count on. Whether he is helping residents get where they need to go or stepping in to lend a hand wherever it is needed, he brings a positive attitude, dependability, and genuine care to everything he does.

As HR Director Rosalie Omandam shared, Jose truly represents what The Selfhelp Home is all about: compassion, dedication, teamwork, and excellent service.

What a year it has been with Karl. 💙

For the past year, Karl has been part of The Selfhelp Home as our intern from Reconciliation Service for Peace, spending his time learning from our residents, hearing their stories, taking part in programs, and becoming a familiar face throughout our community.

But somewhere along the way, “our intern” simply became Karl — a beloved part of Selfhelp whose kindness, curiosity, and warmth touched just about everyone he met.

His going-away party was filled with plenty of smiles, hugs, memories, and, of course, plenty of bittersweet goodbyes.

Karl, thank you for everything you brought to Selfhelp this year.

You may be heading on to your next adventure, but you’ll always have a place here with us.

Join us on Thursday, September 17 for an afternoon of learning, conversation, and connection.

In collaboration with the Uptown Chamber of Commerce, we’ll welcome Melinda Balint Kotansky, Director of Business Development at Unity Hospice and Palliative Care, for an accessible discussion on hospice and palliative care — what these services are, how they work, when they may be appropriate, and how they can support individuals and families navigating serious illness.

Come for the conversation and stay for the networking. Lunch and beverages will be provided.

When Karl arrived at The Selfhelp Home as our ARSP intern, he quickly became part of the family.

Karl came to Selfhelp ready to listen, learn, and build meaningful relationships. He gave us that and so much more. While saying goodbye was not easy, we are deeply grateful for every conversation, laugh, program, and memory he shared with us.

Karl, you will always have a home at Selfhelp.
