Reverend Sampson Lovely Townes, Sr.





Reverend Sampson Lovely Townes, Sr., completed his earthly assignment and was awarded his wings on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, with his family by his side. He was born on March 19, 1930 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia to the late Doctor Townes and Mider Townes.

Sampson attended Finchley Elementary School. He accepted Jesus Christ into his life at an early age and joined St. John African American Episcopal Church in 1949.

Sampson was married to the former Mary Mason on May 9, 1951. This union was blessed with 7 children.

In 1955 he was ordained into the ministry and was appointed pastor of Mount Zion in Boydton, Virginia. In 1960 he was bonded to perform marriages. He pastored several churches including Marshall Chapel in Lynchburg, Virginia, Harmony Circuit, Mount Pisgah, Traynham Grove in South Boston, Virginia, Saint Michaels in Riverdale and St. John in Finchley, Virginia. He served 26 years as pastor to Mount Pisgah, St. John, and St. Michael A.M.E. Sampson served 36 years as pastor from the Virginia A.M.E. Conference until retirement due to conference due to age limitation law.

Sampson worked on Buggs Island Dam until completion, 18 years at Tunstall Mine in North Carolina until closure, 50 plus years at owning his own business in farming.

Reverend Townes, Sr., was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bell Mason Townes; brothers, Fulton Townes, Myelon Townes, Abraham Townes, Vincent Townes; sisters, Trentace Jones, Alice Burwell, Matilda T. Anderson and Martha T. Martin.

Reverend Townes, Sr., is survived by his 7 children; Doctor Junior Townes, Sampson L. Townes, Jr. (Audrey), Stanley L. Townes, Mary Lee Townes, Martha Ann Townes, Charlene T. Harper (Calvin), Barbara T. Jefferson (Wayne); brother, Moses Townes; sister-in-law, Alice Bibbs; 4 granddaughters; 3 grandsons; 2 unborn great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, friends and family.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at the Carter’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend L. Daniel King delivering the eulogy with burial in the St. John African American Episcopal Church.

Carter’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Obituary

On Saturday, May 23, 2026, God called his faithful servant, Harry William Marrow, Jr home. Harry was born October 9, 1948, to the late Harry William Marrow, Sr and Ellen Pettus Marrow.

He received his formal education in Mecklenburg County Public Schools and was a graduate of West End High School in 1967. During his youth, he accepted Christ and became a member of New Liberty Baptist Church in Finchley, Virginia where he was a dedicated member where he served on the Trustee Board and worked diligently in any capacity needed.

On October 22, 1966, he married Lillie Mae Thomas and to this union two children were born, Yulando S. Marrow and MiChelle D. Marrow.

In his youth, he worked in the local grocery store, drove school bus for Mecklenburg County School, and later was employed by Burlington Industries in Clarksville, VA for a number of years and Central Fidelity Bank prior to starting his own construction business, Marrow Construction, Landscaping and Excavating, in 1974 of which he loved and dedicated himself. In addition, he was a member of the Clarksville Jaycees, West End Alumni Association, a Trustee at Bluestone Harmony Headquarters serving the Boys and Men Ministry for many years and was elected Chairman of Board for Mecklenburg County Zoning Board, member of the Homeowner's Association, member of the Oasis Club and worked with Southside Planning. He was a devoted father and friend to all who knew him. He loved working, being outside at his shop and Man Cave (Harry's Man Cave), watching westerns, cooking and barbecuing, spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents, Ellen Pettus Marrow and Harry William Marrow, Sr, sisters, Anita Allen and Rozena Taylor, and brother, Charles Marrow.

His memories will be cherished forever by his loving and devoted children, son, Yulando "Landy" Marrow (Tracy) of Boydton, VA, daughter, MiChelle "Niecy" Marrow of Richmond, VA, two honorary daughters, Janita Tuck of Buffalo Junction, VA and Velma "Kitty" Smith of Wake Forest, NC, four grandchildren, Damione R Marrow and Franki D Marrow of Richmond, VA, Ashley Tingen and Patrick Tingen, of Boydton, VA, four great-grandchildren, KhaMaria Lee, Dameari Marrow, Lyric Marrow and Dameiyon Marrow. One aunt, Dorothy Winbush of Oxford, NC, four sisters, Alice Marrow and Juanita Richardson both of Henderson, NC, Gertrude Newton and Alfreda Newton (William) both of Buffalo Junction, VA, one brother, Samuel Marrow of Henderson, NC, one sister-in-law, Delilah Marrow of Henderson, NC and one brother-in-law, James "Jimmy" Taylor of Oxen Hill, MD, a dear devoted cousin, Mary Alice Goode of Clarksville, VA, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and many, many devoted friends.

There will be a walk through held on Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 12 Noon-6:00PM at Carter’s Funeral Home; 206 Virginia Avenue; Clarksville, Virginia 23927.

Funeral service for Mr. Harrow William Marrow, Jr., will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026 at 2:00PM. Service will be held at The House of Prayer; 6793 US-58; Buffalo Junction, Virginia 24529. The Reverend Mack Talley will deliver the eulogy.

Deacon Annie Mildred Walker Oliver, born February 11, 1942 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, born to Ann Walker. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann Walker; four siblings; her husband, Charlie William Oliver and granddaughter, Angela Walker.

Deacon Annie M. Oliver was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church #1 since a young age. Serving as a clerk for 24 years, a Missionary, Usher and Trustee. She was also a member of the Household of ruth for many years. Annie served as a CNA for 20 years.

She leaves to cherish her memories, daughter, Eleanor W. Shearin of the home; son, James T. Walker of Arizona; grandchildren, James Walker, Jr. of Arkansas, James Michael Walker of Virginia, Amy Sherain of Virgina, Christian Walker of Paris France; great-grandchildren, Danella Davis of Norfolk, Daniel Shearin of Virginia, Eva and Rallie of Paris France, Sierra and James Walker of Arkansas, Kamilla Walker, Faith Burgen of South Carolina; a devoted sister-in-law, Barbara Oliver; devoted nephew, Winston Taylor of Maryland and a vast number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at 12 Noon at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church #1; Clarksville, Virginia. Reverend Albert Walker will deliver the eulogy.

On Thursday, April 9, 2026, God came and took our beloved Derek Tyrone Richardson home to
be with him. Derek was born to Barbara A. Richardson and the late John V. Richardson, Sr. on December 7, 1987 in Halifax County, Virginia.

Derek was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Boydton, Virginia. Derek was baptized at an early age and he was a faithful member. Derek attended and received his education from the Mecklenburg County Public Schools. He was a 2007 graduate of Bluestone Senior High School, Skipwith, Virginia.

In his down time, Derek loved watching basketball, football and playing games on his play station. He found joy sitting with his mother, Barbara watching Family Feud at night. Derek always wore a smile and his laugh was contagious. He would keep you laughing at all times.

Derek was preceded in death by his father, John V. Richardson, Sr.; brother, John, Jr.; maternal grandmother, Fannie S. Harris; paternal grandmother, Barbara J. Richardson; six uncles, Walter Evans, Sr., John Harris, Joseph Harris, Jr., James Richardson, Fredrick Richardson and George Richardson.

Derek leaves to cherish his memories; his mother, Barbara Richardson; two brothers, Kevin Richardson of Ashburn, Virginia, Michael (Adrianna) Richardson of South Hill, Virginia; two sisters, Sheleta (Cisco) Crews of Chesterfield, Virginia, Kenyetta (David) Rice of Baskerville, Virginia; three aunts, Fannie Faltz, Gloria Harris both of Courtland, Virginia, Sarah Richardson of Boydton, Virginia; eight uncles, Willie Evans, James Evans both of Alberta, Virginia, Thomas Evans,Randy Richardson, Wendell (Grace) Richardson all of Boydton, Virginia, Albert (Wanda) Richardson, Michael (Gloria) Richardson all of Palmer Springs, Virginia, William (Tammy) Richardson of Fredericksburg, Virginia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Ladaysha Davis.

On Friday, April 17, 2026 there will be a walk through from 1:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Carter's Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 11:00 AM. Service will be held at the Shiloh Baptist Church; 4549 Phillis Road; Boydton, Virginia with the Reverend Linda B. Goode, presiding and the Reverend Tyrone Craighead delivering the eulogy.

Obituary For Ruth Richardson
On Thursday, April 2, 2026, Ruth Elnora Richardson entered into eternal rest at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health Community Memorial Hospital in
South Hill, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Mary Walker and the wife of the late Elder William E. Richardson.

Ruth was born on September 5, 1940 at the historic Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. During her early years, she attended Mecklenburg County Public
Schools. She was baptized at an early age and became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Later in life, she became a faithful member of the Bibleway Church of Christ in Boydton, Virginia where she remained until her passing. She served in numerous capacities at Bibleway Church, including Mother of the Church, a member of the Missionary Society, and an usher. She was also a dedicated servant in the community, participating in the Noon Day Prayer Group and the Women and Girls Prayer Circle. She worked for and retired from Russell Stover Candies after many years of service. Beyond her work in the church and community, Ruth was a devoted homemaker and wife, raising her children with love and care.

A woman of strength, grace, and unwavering faith, she was also a proud matriarch whose wisdom, warmth, and guidance shaped generations. Whether through her
comforting words, home-cooked meals, steadfast prayers, encouragement, or community involvement, she made everyone who crossed her path feel cherished and
seen. She enjoyed reading her Bible, participating in church prayer groups, working on word search puzzles, and driving (with the pedal to the metal).

Ruth is survived by her six children: Carolyn, Margaret, Calvin (Loretta), Karen, Tony, and Anita; two grandchildren: Ciera and Bria; two siblings: Rose Baskerville and John Goode; and special relatives Albert Richardson, Leeanna Jackson, and Terrick Bowers. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends who will deeply miss her presence. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Walker; her beloved husband, Elder William E. Richardson, with whom she shared 43 years of marriage; and her cherished cat, Miss Kitty.

On Friday, April 10, 2026, there will be a walk through from 1:00PM-6:00PM. There will be a viewing at Bibleway on Saturday, April 11. 2026 from 11:00AM-12:00PM. Funeral service will begin at 12:00PM.

Funeral service for Mother Ruth Richardson will be held at the Bibleway Church of Christ; 800 Skipwith Road; Boydton, Virginia. The Reverend Linda B. Goode will officiate and the Elder Carl Luck will deliver the eulogy.

Grover Lee Alexander, age 95, peacefully passed away at home on March 9, 2026, surrounded by the love and care of his family.

Grover was born on March 14, 1930, in Skipwith, Virginia. Throughout his life, he was known as a hardworking and quiet man who believed in staying busy and providing for himself and his family. If there was one thing people knew about Grover, it was that he always had a project going and a plan in motion.

On September 1, 1956, her married Christine Tucker, and together they built a life and family rooted in resilience and determination.

Grover was an entrepreneur long before the word became popular. He owned and operated small neighborhood convenience stores, one on 10th Street in Newark, New Jersey, and another on the corner of Claiborne Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. He also operated a candy and ice cream truck, traveling through neighborhoods, ball games, and community gatherings selling treats and snacks. Grover had a natural gift for business and was known as someone who always knew how to make a dollar and keep things moving.

He was a longtime member of Fifth Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, and although he lived a simple and humble life, his faith remained steady.

Grover was a man of many layers. He was hardworking, quiet, resourceful, observant, and always looking for the next opportunity. He loved yard sales and collecting things, and he had a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

He enjoyed spending time in the yard, working on project around the house and if you knew Grover, you also knew he could cook-especially his cabbage, which many remember fondly.

Grover was preceded in death by his parents, George and Rosa Alexander; his brother, Robert Lee “Reed” Alexander (Sarah); his beloved son, George “Vedo” Vincent Alexander (Danielle); and his longtime companion, Nettie Patricia Lett. He is now reunited with them and the loved ones who went before him.

He leaves to cherish his memory, Christine; his daughter, Celestine Alexander (Butch); his grandchildren, Santia Cook (Tyrone), Saida Coles, Patrick Alexander (Tia), and Koby Alexander (Tania); his great-grandchildren, Quamine, Quinayah, Quahid, Naaiem, Azmia, Kyair and nephew, Robert “Pooney” Toombs (Mary). He is also remembered by his close loved ones, Connie Brooks, Tasha, Ashley; along with many extended family members, friends, and community members whose lives were touched by his presence.

Grover lived life on his own terms-working hard, caring for his family and always finding something to do. Though he may be gone from our sight, the memories, lessons, and love he shared will remain in our hearts forever.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Carter's Funeral Home Chapel, Clarksville, Virginia, with the Elder Dominic Holloway, Sr., officiating. Burial took place at the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Skipwith, Virginia.
