If you need medical assistance while our office is closed, our on-call provider is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Southern Family Medicine is proud to celebrate our partnership with HamesNet Research and our continued commitment to advancing rural healthcare through clinical research.

In February 2024, Southern Family Medicine joined HamesNet Research in a hypertension study focused on improving primary care and cardiovascular health in rural communities. Over the past two years, we have had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Ledford and her dedicated team to continue the remarkable legacy of Evans County's own Dr. Hames.

Dr. Hames helped launch the historic Evans County Heart Study in 1958 with funding from the National Institutes of Health. This groundbreaking research produced more than 560 published scientific papers and helped demonstrate the importance of HDL ("good") cholesterol in cardiovascular health. Dr. Hames was a pioneer in the epidemiologic study of heart disease and stroke, and his work continues to impact healthcare around the world today.

It has been an honor for Southern Family Medicine to help carry this legacy forward for the residents of Evans County and surrounding communities.

We are also excited to announce that Dr. Thomas J. Miller Jr. and Mrs. Lanette Tippins have recently been selected to serve on the inaugural HamesNet Steering Committee. This committee will help guide future research priorities, evaluate proposed projects for real-world clinical feasibility, and ensure that ongoing research remains meaningful to both healthcare providers and the communities we serve.

Another exciting development from this partnership is the creation of a new Clinical Research Elective through the Medical College of Georgia. This six-week rotation will allow medical students to train alongside our team at Southern Family Medicine, gaining hands-on experience in rural primary care research while contributing to ongoing HamesNet projects. By exposing future physicians to community-based clinical research, we hope to inspire the next generation of healthcare leaders and strengthen the future of rural medicine.

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to research that improves patient care while honoring the legacy of one of Evans County's most influential physicians. The future of rural healthcare research is bright, and we are proud to be part of it.

✨ Ramsey – Graduate of Pinewood Christian Academy and will be attending the University of Georgia this fall to major in Biology.

✨ Charley – Graduate of Georgia Southern University School of Nursing! Charley will continue working part-time at Southern Family Medicine before transitioning to the Labor & Delivery Department at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
