October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! Originally started as just a week back in 1945, NDEAM officially became a month in 1988. Since the beginning, NDEAM has been used to raise awareness of the importance of including people with disabilities in the workplace. AAPD recognizes the amazing talent disabled people bring to work every single day, but we love a reason to talk about it!
As of August 2026, according to the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), only 39.8% of working-aged people with disabilities were employed. Compare that to 74.6% of non-disabled people. Disabled people deserve access to well paying, meaningful employment just like everybody else. NDEAM might be the time to formally recognize it, but advancing the economic power of people with disabilities is a cornerstone of our work. Happy NDEAM!
