The first week after a gum graft rarely looks like the finished result. The area may be swollen, tender, or look different in color as the tissue begins to heal.

Gum graft healing happens in stages, and every patient’s timeline can look a little different. Swelling and discomfort generally improve early in recovery, while the graft continues to mature and blend with the surrounding gum tissue over the following weeks and months.

The goal goes beyond how the graft looks during those first few days. Gum grafting can help protect exposed roots, reduce sensitivity, and build stronger tissue around the teeth.

Wondering what to expect along the way? Read our full gum graft healing guide on the blog for a closer look at each stage of recovery.

One of the most common worries about a gum graft is the roof of the mouth. For years, that was where the tissue came from, which left a second sore spot to heal.

That is no longer the only option. Medically processed donor tissue can cover exposed roots without touching your palate. For many people that means less discomfort and an easier recovery, especially when more than one tooth needs work.

The right approach depends on your gums, your bone, and the plan for the tooth.

Give us a call to ask whether donor tissue fits your situation.

A scraped knee scabs over. A cracked bone knits back together. Enamel does neither. It is the hardest material in the body and the only part with no living cells, so a chip stays a chip until it is repaired.

That is the quiet case for not waiting. A small chip is easy and inexpensive to bond now. Left alone, the same tooth can decay, crack further, or reach the nerve, and the fix only grows from there.

Message our Colorado Springs team about a chip you have been ignoring, and we will tell you how simple the repair is likely to be.

A chip usually happens fast. A kernel of popcorn, a fall, a bite of something harder than it looked. The panic that follows is often bigger than the problem.

Here is what helps in the first hour. Rinse with warm salt water. If you find the broken piece, keep it in milk or saliva, since it is sometimes usable. Cover any sharp edge with dental wax so it does not cut your tongue, and use a cold compress and ibuprofen for the ache. The one thing to skip is household glue. It does real damage and makes the repair harder.

The fixes range from a quick polish to a crown, and most are more comfortable than people expect.

Most people brace for a dental crown expecting the worst. The reality is a lot calmer than the reputation.

A crown is a custom cap for a tooth that's cracked, worn, or too damaged for a filling to hold. The process is straightforward. We check the tooth, numb it, shape it, and take a digital scan. A temporary crown protects it while your permanent one is made, and at the final visit we check the fit, color, and bite before bonding it in place.

You're numb the whole time, so there's no pain during treatment. Mild soreness afterward is normal, and most people head right back to their day.

We plan every crown for the long run, with the material and the bite chosen to last.

For the full walkthrough, including how long different crown materials last, read the complete guide on our blog.

Taking a second afternoon off work for one tooth is a hard sell for most people. It's the reason plenty of folks put off a crown they already know they need.

Same-day crowns change that math. Using CAD/CAM technology, we scan the tooth, design the crown on-screen, and mill it from a solid ceramic block right in our Colorado Springs office. You leave with the permanent crown in place, usually in about two hours. No temporary, no second trip two weeks later.

The precision holds up too. You get a durable, natural-looking result without rearranging your week around it.

If the time commitment is what's been holding you back, message our team and ask whether same-day is an option for your tooth.

"You need a crown." It's one of the more common things you'll hear in a dental chair, and often it's the right call. A crown can rescue a tooth that decay or a fracture has pushed past what a filling can fix.

But it's not a small decision. Fitting a crown means permanently removing enamel, the tooth underneath can still decay at the margin, and the material you choose affects how it looks and how long it lasts. None of that makes a crown wrong. It just means it's worth understanding before you say yes.

That's also where the details matter. Removing only what's necessary protects the nerve and gives the crown its best shot at lasting—the kind of judgment that comes with experience. Dr. Jennings holds an MAGD, a distinction fewer than 2% of dentists earn.

Here's one that surprises people: getting a crown doesn't make the tooth underneath cavity-proof.

The crown itself can't decay. But the natural tooth under it still can, usually right at the margin, the tiny seam where the crown meets your gumline. If plaque settles there, bacteria can work their way underneath, and because it's hidden, it often isn't caught until an X-ray finds it.

Huge news we recently shared on our blog: Dr. Nicholas Ruana has earned his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry.

Here's the short version, and why it matters if you're choosing a dentist in Colorado Springs.

The Fellowship (FAGD) takes 500 hours of continued study and a comprehensive exam, completed long after dental school. Paired with the board certification Dr. Ruana has held since 2023, it's a combination few general dentists pursue. The foundation came from a decade as an Army dentist and a two-year advanced residency. Years of training well beyond the license every dentist holds.

For you, that means care reflecting how dentistry is practiced now, more complex cases handled under one roof, and a conservative, prevention-first approach for the whole family.

We broke all of it down on the blog; what these credentials actually mean, and how they show up in your care.

Reaching for a mint every hour and it's still not working? The mint was never the fix.

Allergy breath comes from dry mouth and post-nasal drip, so the things that actually help are the ones that keep your mouth wet and clear out the mucus. Sip water through the day. Rinse your sinuses with a neti pot or saline spray. Add a tongue scraper to your morning routine — it removes far more of the odor-causing buildup than brushing does on its own. And skip the alcohol mouthwash, because it dries you out and makes things worse.

If your breath still isn't fresh after a couple weeks of this, it's not gum you need. It could be gum disease, a sinus issue, or something we should take a look at.

Dealing with breath that won't quit this season? Message our Colorado Springs team and let's sort out what's really going on.
