An insurer shouldn’t be able to pay your practice, wait nearly two years, and then demand the money back.

Physicians spoke up, and OSMA pressed lawmakers for reform. Senate Bill 162 is now law, cutting Ohio’s insurer takeback window from 24 months to 12 in most cases and doubling the time practices have to respond and appeal, from 30 days to 60.

SB 162 shows what a coordinated physician voice can accomplish.

Add your voice to Ohio’s physician community working to influence what happens next.

There is no substitute for a physician who cares about you, listens to you, and has the time to answer your questions.

A strong and trusting patient-physician relationship helps patients navigate complex health decisions with confidence. In fact, 85% of patients agree that the bond that physicians form with their patients is central to healthcare. It is the sacrosanct bond with patients that Ohio physicians work to protect every day.

OSMA Foundation Summer Scholar Cynthia Bukirwa spent her summer exploring how new imaging technology could expand access to care for children.

At Nationwide Children's Hospital, the The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences student paired research with learning in the operating room. She’ll continue that work throughout the academic year.

“I am deeply grateful to the Summer Scholars donors and supporters whose generosity made this summer of mentorship, research, and growth possible,” Cynthia shared.

It’s no secret that healthcare can be complicated. Navigating systems and decoding medical terms takes time and can be frustrating.

Physicians devote themselves to years of training and education to confidently provide the highest quality of care for their patients. They know helping patients make informed decisions about their health starts by making room for questions, explaining options, and helping them understand what comes next.

OSMA joined Governor Mike DeWine and fellow physician advocates for the ceremonial signing of SB 162, an insurer takeback reform we helped pass through the legislature to become law.

Now in effect, the law generally reduces the takeback window from two years to one and gives practices more time to challenge repayment demands.

“That stability allows physicians to plan responsibly, invest in their practices, and focus their resources where they belong — caring for patients,” said OSMA President Dr. Gary Katz

Thank you to the lawmakers, physician members, and partners who helped make this possible!

Physicians are integral in helping shape the future of medicine through the care they provide, fighting alongside patients for high-quality care and timely access to care every step of the way. From the exam room to medical research, education, and advocacy, their work reflects a deep commitment to healing patients and making sure they feel heard, understood, and supported.

That patient-physician relationship is at the heart of what it means to practice medicine. Healthcare is strongest when physicians aren’t burdened by red tape and instead have the time to listen and care for their patients.
