Building community, one piece at a time. 🧩💛

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Origin Mental Wellness during Taste of Downtown! We loved welcoming you into our space, sharing snacks and conversations, and giving you a glimpse of what we do.

Our “Accept the Challenge” puzzle brought neighbors together around one table: 1,000 pieces, one community, and a deadline! Whether you added one piece or twenty, thank you for being part of it.

We also stopped by our neighbors at The Valley to enjoy some live music and connect. So much to discover right here in downtown Columbus!

Thank you for making the day so special. Our door is always open to connection. ✨

What actually happens in the brain when you take an SSRI?

SSRIs work by blocking serotonin reuptake, allowing serotonin to remain available a little longer between brain cells.

But serotonin isn’t simply a “happy chemical,” and the effects of these medications go beyond an immediate change in serotonin signaling. The brain adapts over time, which is one reason treatment can take time to have its full effect.

This month, we’re breaking down psychiatric medications, common myths, side effects, and some of the questions we hear most often in practice.

Because understanding your treatment is part of feeling informed and empowered in your care.

Always discuss medication questions, side effects, or changes with your prescribing provider.

This month at Origin, we’re talking about psychiatric medications.

What do SSRIs actually do in the brain?
Will they change your personality?
Why do they work for some people and not others?
Does being prescribed an antipsychotic mean your provider thinks you’re psychotic?
And what side effects should you know about?

Throughout the month, Tenia and Lauren will be breaking down some of the most common questions, misconceptions, and concerns around antidepressants and antipsychotic medications.

Because understanding your treatment matters — and medication should always be part of an informed, individualized conversation with your provider.

Follow along as we talk SSRIs, antipsychotics, side effects, monitoring, myths, and more.

A space can change the way you feel.

At Origin, we wanted to preserve the character of the building — the exposed brick, warm wood, natural light and original architecture — while creating a space that feels calm, thoughtful and welcoming.

Because care begins before the conversation even starts. 🤎

We think the little details matter.

When we created Origin, we wanted the space to feel warm, calm and welcoming, not just look beautiful.

From the lighting to the plants, the textures and the little things in each corner, everything was chosen with love and care.

Because asking for help can feel vulnerable. And sometimes, walking into a space that feels warm, thoughtful and comforting can make that first step feel a little easier.

Because how a space makes you feel matters too.

What if some psychiatric symptoms are not only psychiatric?

Today, our co-founder and provider, Tenia Scarver, APRN, PMHNP-BC, had the opportunity to speak at the Central Ohio Mental Health Professionals CEU Luncheon hosted by Teal Saguaro Wellness.

Her presentation, “Beyond Medication: The Role of Metabolic Health, Lifestyle, & Whole-Person Care in Mental & Brain Health,” explored something we care deeply about at Origin: the connection between metabolic health, brain health, and mental health.

Our brains require an incredible amount of energy to function. Blood sugar balance, inflammation, hormones, nutrition, movement, sleep, and metabolic health can all influence the way our brains function — and in turn, how we feel, think, respond to stress, and experience everyday life.

These systems don’t exist in isolation. They influence one another continuously, which is why supporting mental health sometimes means looking beyond symptoms and considering the whole person.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to share these conversations with fellow mental health professionals, learn from one another, and continue expanding the way we think about mental health care.

Thank you to Teal Saguaro Wellness for having us. 🤍

How much care can live in ordinary things?

Cooking at home is one of those things for us.

There’s something special about taking the time to prepare a meal. Chopping the vegetables, seasoning the food, letting something cook on the stove, setting the table. None of it has to be elaborate, but there’s intention in it.

Wellness can feel so complicated sometimes.
Like we need the perfect routine, the perfect meals, the perfect morning.

But care can also look like this.

Making something nourishing.
Sitting down and actually enjoying it.
Creating a meal that feels familiar, comforting, or reminds you of home.
Giving yourself a little time and attention in the middle of an ordinary day.

There is so much love in those small rituals.

And those moments count too. 🤍

Somewhere between watering, waiting, and figuring out what actually wants to grow, Lauren’s garden became more than just a place to grow food.

It became one of those little places to pause.
A reminder that growth doesn’t always happen quickly, and that it doesn’t have to.

Some things need time, attention, consistency, and a little grace.

Plants do.
And so do we. 🌱

Maybe we don’t always need to do more to feel better.

Sometimes we just need a moment to come back to ourselves.
