Myth: You need to spend hours on the floor with educational toys to build your child’s language

Reality: Language and connection can happen anywhere

I spoke to a mom today who told me she felt guilty that she wasn’t playing on the ground enough with her child (when she totally was)! While we love floor play, we let her know that some of the best opportunities to support communication happens during everyday moments… walking the dog, searching for rocks, grocery shopping, or making lunch.

In a world of social media and comparisons, it’s normal for parents to feel guilt. Even more so if your child has a speech and language delay. But I want you to know that you don’t have to spend hours of your day playing on the floor or buying the newest toys to develop rich language and connection.

Send this to a mom who needs to hear that’s it’s okay to take a coffee break, to take a walk outside, to go on a target run, or give your child some independent play 💙

Lakes Speech Spotlight: Brittany! 👋🏻

Brittany is our practice manager who ensures everything runs smoothly! From fighting insurance denials, to tetris-style client scheduling, to office operations, to fixing anything - you name it! We would be lost without her efficiency and direction.

Outside of Lakes Speech, Brittany can be found in her garden, on the lake, at the ski slopes, or anywhere outside with her two little girls and family!

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that impacts a child’s ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed for speech. Children with CAS often know what they want to say, but their brain has difficulty sending the correct movement messages to the muscles used for speaking.

CAS requires specialized, motor-based intervention, and early support can make a meaningful difference. At Lakes Speech + Language, our pediatric clinicians provide individualized, evidence-based therapy to support children with apraxia and their families. We’re especially proud that Candice is recognized as an Apraxia Kids recommended provider! 💙

Therapist Spotlight: Sarah! 👋🏻

Sarah is the founder of Lakes Speech + Language and has been a speech-language pathologist for 12+ years. Sarah brings experience from Corewell Health and opened Lakes Speech + Language in 2020 during the pandemic. Sarah started her SLP career with adults and adolescents and transitioned to a more pediatric focus after watching her oldest son develop language. Sarah specializes in:

🗣️Stuttering
🧸Early Childhood Language
🎯Adolescent Therapy (speech, language, executive function)

Outside of being an SLP, Sarah can be found at her son’s soccer/football games, bike riding at Kensington with her family, trying a new restaurant, or planning her next trip.
