Virginia, who is 80, was admitted to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital Conroe following a prolonged hospitalization for a series of serious conditions: acute hypoxic respiratory failure, pulmonary histoplasmosis (a fungal infection of the lungs), pneumonia, and congestive heart failure. She also suffered from critical illness neuropathy with severe deconditioning.

During her stay at Cornerstone Conroe, her respiratory status initially declined, with oxygen requirements increasing from 10 liters via OxyMask to 40 liters (at 100% concentration) via Vapotherm. Virginia experienced significant shortness of breath, frequent desaturations, and very poor activity tolerance, limiting her participation in therapy.

Throughout her stay, the respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing teams worked closely with her to improve her strength and endurance. Over time, she made steady progress, improving both her respiratory status and functional abilities, which enabled her to participate more in therapy sessions. Her improvement continued from there.

After 22 days at Cornerstone, Virginia was strong enough to discharge and transfer to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue her recovery. At the time of discharge, she relied on only 2 liters of oxygen via nasal cannula and she could actively participate in physical and occupational therapy, with the ability to walk 50 feet. Virginia expressed gratitude for the care she received at Cornerstone Conroe, stating that everyone treated her well and helped her recover. She especially praised Jason from the Physical Therapy team for helping her regain strength.

As she left Cornerstone, Virginia said she was looking forward to eventually returning home and spending time with her family. She also said she’d come back to visit our team walking on her own and without supplemental oxygen.

Beverly lived an active life when she was admitted to a hospital with a cough and increasing difficulty breathing. Her condition rapidly worsened, leading to respiratory failure that required mechanical ventilation, two weeks of sedated bed rest, and the placement of a tracheostomy for medical stability.

Once medically stable, Beverly was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Conroe for ventilator weaning and intensive rehabilitation. Upon admission, she required maximal assistance just to sit up at the edge of the bed. She remained dependent on ventilator support through her tracheostomy and assistance for all daily activities. Despite the challenges ahead, Beverly approached her recovery with determination and resilience. Over the next four weeks, she participated in intensive respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy as she focused on rebuilding her strength, endurance, mobility, and independence.

Her progress was extraordinary. By the time of discharge, Beverly had been fully weaned from oxygen support, her tracheostomy had been successfully decannulated, and she could walk more than 300 feet with a walker. She also regained independence with eating and activities of daily living.

Beverly expressed heartfelt gratitude to the entire Cornerstone staff and shared how much she valued her recovery experience at our facility. We are thrilled that Beverly was able to return home to her husband and her beloved dog, Bruno. We wish her continued health, happiness, and success.

Carol arrived at the ER with coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. She was admitted to HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe with an asthma exacerbation, flu, and respiratory failure, requiring intubation and sedation for nearly two weeks to protect her airway.

Carol was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Conroe to continue her recovery with IV antibiotics, ventilator weaning, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. After six weeks at Cornerstone, Carol’s progress was nothing short of inspiring! She was successfully decannulated from her tracheostomy tube and able to breathe comfortably on just 2 liters of oxygen via nasal cannula. She also regained the strength to feed herself, stand, and walk 15 feet with a rolling walker.

At the time of discharge, Carol was ready to continue building her independence and preparing to return home. She was especially excited to get back in her kitchen, where she loves to cook and bake for her family.

After Nathan was admitted to the hospital with severe neck pain, he learned the cause was a neck artery aneurysm that required emergency surgery. Following the procedure at HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe, Nathan faced serious complications, including respiratory failure requiring ventilator support and a gallbladder infection (cholecystitis). His long stay in the ICU left him bedbound and profoundly weak.

By the time Nathan was transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Conroe, he was still on the ventilator, unable to stand and required maximum assistance just to sit at the edge of the bed. With determination and the support of his care team, Nathan began an intensive program of physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapy. Over three weeks, his progress was remarkable. He was successfully weaned off the ventilator, regained independence in selfcare activities such as dressing and eating, and worked his way up to walking more than 400 feet using a platform walker.

At the time of discharge, Nathan could transfer himself independently and had regained the strength to take the next steps in his recovery.

The Cornerstone team is proud of the progress Nathan achieved during his time with us, and we wish him continued success as he continues his rehabilitation journey at home with his family!
