I have had requests for an introduction course to hiking that would include hiking preparation, hiking safety, and backpacking medicine. I have been working on developing the course and it will roll out soon. We will hold a small session at the trail head, conduct equipment checks, build first aid kits and do a guided hike with multiple scenarios for trauma and medical emergencies. Spent last weekend outdoors teaching Wilderness First Responder. It is still very hot and heat exhaustion can creep up on you. Stay prepared, know the signs. Just wanted to share this flyer on Summer Hiking Safety.

Had a great weekend doing day 1 and day 2 of skills for Wilderness First Responder. We did medical and trauma assessments, MARCH assessment, medical emergencies, hyperthermia and hypothermia including hypothermia wraps. We even did an evening hike with several scenarios yesterday. Today, we had a review and spent the day doing ortho exams, ABD exams, and spinal injuries. We started off with traditional treatment then we improvised. Some improvised splinting and cervical immobilization pictures. We used the DASH splint, SAM splint and whatever you could find to immobilize.

We also improvised stretchers and built emergency shelters.

The unwritten rules of the trail, finally written down.

Most of these come with a little fine print. Uphill has the right of way, but plenty of climbers will happily wave you down and take the breather, and that's their call to make. Cutting a switchback saves thirty seconds and starts an erosion channel that takes decades to heal. Viewpoints are shared when someone's waiting. An empty summit is all yours.

And number 6 is safety, not manners: when yaks or mules pass on a narrow trail, stand on the uphill side. A bump from a loaded animal on a narrow section can put you over the side, and it has.

Save it, share it, and send it directly to the person who plays music out loud on the trail. They know who they are.

I scheduled a paramedic refresher for during the month of September on Monday and Wednesday nights. Class will be virtual instructor led, you can take it from your computer. Paramedic Refresher (Virtual Instructor Led Training) $300.00 NAEMT Paramedic Refresher (Virtual Instructor Led Training) will cover the 30 hours for the National Component of your NREMT Recert. It will also apply to EMT's and AEMT's. Course will cover components of PHTLS,AMLS, GEMS, EMS Safety, and Emergency Pediatric Care. The course will be mostly scenario based and is CAPCE approved through the National Association of EMT's. Course dates are: 9/1/26, 9/9/26, 9/14/26, 9/16/26, 9/21/26, 9/23/26, 9/28/26, and 9/30/26. Class time will be 6pm to 9pm. You can register on our website, and I will send you log in information to attend the sessions.

We offer Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder Training with certification from Survival Med.
