If you are planning to hike, paddle, or birdwatch on Arkansas public lands, keep in mind that a new $10.50 annual WMA/Lake Conservation Permit went into effect on July 1st, 2026. This fee is required for anyone age 16 or older using lands and lakes owned by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Before implementing the new $10.50 WMA/Lake Conservation Permit on July 1, 2026, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) gathered 8,447 public survey responses to gauge community feedback. The results showed that 41.5% of respondents supported the proposal, 24.7% opposed it, and 33.8% had no opinion. While supporters outnumbered opponents in the percentage data, opponents submitted a higher volume of written comments, and many local birdwatchers and hikers expressed frustration over a perceived lack of direct outreach before the fee was finalized.

Fortunately, you do not need to buy this permit if you already hold a valid Arkansas hunting or fishing license, and the rule does not apply to State Parks or National Forests. Just be sure not to skip it on commission-owned properties, as being caught without one could result in a surprise ticket of over $200. You can easily purchase the permit online or directly through the AGFC mobile app before your next outdoor trip.
