With no molars left, these senior horses get a special diet, part of which includes hay that has been chopped up since they no longer have the capacity to grind it on their own. A fresh bale is Chase’s favorite, and he watches the gate all morning, knowing immediately when it’s hay time. Just like us horses have favorite foods and experiences, and the more we can recognize their preferences and desires the closer the relationship we can build.

I didn’t know them when we were young. And honestly, that’s lucky for them. I haven’t always been so patient, so intentional, so considerate.

Once upon a time, I was young too. And I made many horrible choices that often hurt those around me. Sometimes on purpose, mostly not, but always in an effort to survive. But it makes people see you a certain way. It makes them jump to conclusions and form opinions.

And I can’t help but wonder if they can relate. 🤔

How many times they pushed, or pulled, or refused a command. How many times they were labeled an “idiot” or “manipulative” or “bound for the glue factory”. Not because any of those things were true, but because the pressure was too great. Because no one made space to hear them. Because being complicit was painful. Because it’s really stinking hard to be patient, intentional, or considerate when no one has ever shown you what that looks like.

So if you know what it’s like to be judged too quickly for your choices, to be labeled something you’re not, to make choices that leave you looking less than perfect — we see you. Mistakes are part of the journey, emotions are part of the experience, and growth is the gift we receive for getting through the tough times.

“How’d you end up with all those shavings in your hair?”

It’s easy to get trapped in “this is how we do it” mentality when the world around us is constantly demanding speed and productivity. That pressure doesn’t leave much room for critical thinking, patience, creativity, or real connection. We get so wrapped up in completing the task and doing it the “right” way, we lose sight of the really important stuff — listening, understanding, meeting needs, compassion.

The world is moving so fast, but it’s not going to slow down unless we get more intentional about being present and prioritizing care over control.

Relationships can get complicated when needs are different for each individual. Here, Drifter really wants to be close to his friend, but Jackie is holding her ground and continues setting gentle boundaries around just how close he can get. And so the conversation goes — back and forth as they consider one another’s needs, and their own — navigating the space in a delicate and precise dance.

The movements are tiny and easy to miss. Watch the clip a few times through and see how many new elements of communication you can notice each time. Look for things like: breath (or lack of), micro expressions, stillness, movement, ears, eyes, muzzles.

Horses take energy conservation very seriously, so entire conversations can happen with seemingly nothing going on. But when we make space to slow down and really notice — each shift, each sigh, each strategically aimed tail swish — the depth of understanding and consideration that exists between these animals is 🤯

We’re excited for the clean up and we’ve gotten safe exposure to scary stuff. Win win! Although it’d be a lot cooler if we had some brontosaurus friends moving in. 🦕😉
