Congratulations to Kayleigh Stark, Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program Coordinator II, has been named GME Program Coordinator of the Year for 2026 by the UT Southwestern Medical Center Graduate Medical Education Office.

The award is bestowed upon a GME Coordinator with three or more years of experience who demonstrate outstanding leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, innovation, service, and mentorship within the GME community.

We are proud to share that the Division of Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine was recently awarded a 2026 National Institutes of Health-funded Institutional Research Service Award to launch its inaugural developmental brain science T32 Training Program, “From Bench to Bedside.”

Led by Lina Chalak, M.D., M.S.C.S., Professor and Division Chief of Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine, the program will help prepare clinical fellows and Ph.D. scientists to become the next generation of academic leaders in developmental brain science.

This marks the first time a Division within the Department of Pediatrics has received this prestigious award. Congratulations to Dr. Chalak the team on this remarkable achievement.

For Wen-Yuan “Elena” Hsieh, M.D., exceptional care begins with making people feel seen, heard, and supported.

It’s a philosophy she learned long before becoming a physician, while watching her parents serve customers at their Chinese food restaurant in Spain. Today, she brings that same commitment to caring for children with conditions ranging from chronic inflammatory diseases to rare genetic disorders.

As the new Chief of the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at UT Southwestern, Dr. Hsieh will pair that patient-centered approach with her expertise as a physician-scientistto advance research, education, and care across UT Southwestern Pediatrics for children with immune-mediated diseases.

Epic has selected Rinarani Sanghavi, M.D., M.B.A., to co-chair its national Physician Wellbeing Steering Board for the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) for a three-year term. This will mark the first time the Board will be led by a pediatrician.

‌As co-chair, she will work with Epic to develop and implement specific tools to improve physician efficiency, reduce the cognitive load associated with EMR, and track related physician wellbeing data linked to EMR. Congratulations, Dr. Sanghavi.

Patrick Leavey, M.D., Associate Vice Chair of Research Operations and Professor of Pediatrics, has been selected to receive an exploratory/developmental (R21) grant from the National Institutes of Health for his study that seeks to improve risk assessment for Ewing sarcoma patients.

Using artificial intelligence to analyze digital pathology images and identify patterns that may predict which patients are at higher risk for poor outcomes, the study's findings could lead to more personalized treatment strategies, improving survival rates and quality of life for children and adolescents facing this disease.
