iykyk. That heavy, dread-in-your-chest feeling when a name pops up and you already know you’re about to manage someone else’s emotions again. It’s exhausting in a way that’s hard to explain to people who didn’t grow up doing this.

If you were the one who learned early to anticipate what everyone else needed, this role might feel like your job. So even now, a phone call can trigger the same bracing your body learned decades ago.

One small thing to try next time you feel that drop in your stomach: before you answer, pause and ask yourself one question… “What do I need right now?” You don’t necessarily have to act on the answer. Just asking it starts to interrupt the autopilot that skips straight to everyone else.

That moment when it clicks. You’ve been saying sorry on instinct, for things you didn’t do and couldn’t control.

If you grew up needing to keep the peace, apologizing may have been more about smoothing things over before they could escalate, taking responsibility so no one else had to feel uncomfortable, making yourself small enough that conflict couldn’t find you than about being wrong. Somewhere along the way, “I’m sorry” became a reflex for trying to create safety for yourself. Your nervous system may have learned apologizing was the fastest way back to calm.

But that comes at a cost, and you end up carrying weight that was never yours, and it gets harder to tell what you’re actually responsible for versus what you just learned to absorb.

In our work together, I use Brainspotting, the Safe and Sound Protocol, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy to help your body learn it’s safe to set that weight down, not just understand intellectually that it isn’t yours to carry.

If this is landing, I’d love to talk. I’m accepting new clients for Brainspotting Personal Intensives and have limited waitlist availability for weekly therapy, both available to clients in Texas. Link in bio to book an intro call.

That might be more than overthinking. You may have a nervous system that learned it wasn’t safe to be caught off guard.

If you grew up needing to predict a room before you could relax in it, “I’ll figure it out when it happens” was never really an option. Your brain learned to run every scenario in advance, because at some point, being unprepared actually cost you something… safety, approval, or peace.

It’s exhausting to live a few steps ahead of your own life like this.

In our work together, I use Brainspotting and the Safe and Sound Protocol to help your nervous system actually learn that it doesn’t have to stay on high alert for every possible version of a conversation before it happens, not just understand that intellectually, but feel it in your body.

Comment “ready” if this is you, and follow for more on CPTSD, attachment, and what nervous system-level healing actually looks like. 🤍
