It started with a first date that included a movie, a late dinner and changing a tire together in the pouring rain.

For the next 43 years, Kathy and John built a life filled with love, family and countless memories. John was always someone who took care of the people he loved, from retiring early to help Kathy through a difficult recovery to making sure she was cared for during his final days.

When John was diagnosed with kidney cancer, he chose to spend his final days at the Care Dimensions Hospice House. There, Kathy and their family had the space to gather, share memories and simply be together.

Today, Kathy continues to find ways to keep John close. She recently purchased a tribute brick in the Garden of Remembrance at the hospice house, a place she often walked while John was there. It gives her a quiet place to return and remember him, while a miniature replica of the brick gives her a keepsake to hold onto at home.

Care Dimensions celebrated our dedicated Spiritual Counselors with a special luncheon this week in recognition of Spiritual Care Week. The gathering provided an opportunity for our spiritual counseling team to connect with one another, members of our clinical staff, and clinical leadership.

As part of the luncheon, Care Dimensions physician Dr. Emma Jones, MD, HMDC, who also maintains a private life coaching practice for clinicians in specialties such as hospice and palliative care, presented on self-care strategies and finding joy both at work and in everyday life. Her presentation highlighted the importance of prioritizing personal well-being, preventing burnout, and making time to recharge so team members can continue to bring their best selves to their work each day.

We are grateful for the compassion and dedication our Spiritual Counselors demonstrate in supporting patients and families throughout the hospice journey. Whether through prayer, spiritual practices, or simply offering a listening ear and a reassuring presence, they honor each person's individual beliefs, values, and wishes.

Care Dimensions’ Spiritual Counselors provide meaningful support to patients and families throughout the hospice journey, meeting each person where they are. Whether through prayer, sacred texts, sacraments and blessings, or simply offering a listening ear and a reassuring presence, they help patients and families navigate this time in ways that reflect their individual beliefs, values and wishes, regardless of whether they follow a religious tradition.

Ron and his wife, Dorothy, elected to include spiritual counseling as part of Ron’s hospice care and were assigned Steve, Spiritual Counselor at Care Dimensions. Dorothy remembers Steve’s gentle, kind presence and the support he offered not only to Ron, but to their entire family. In addition to providing spiritual guidance, Steve helped the family navigate funeral arrangements after Ron’s passing.

“Everybody was always happy to see him,” Dorothy recalled, describing how naturally Steve connected with the many family members and friends who visited Ron.

As we celebrate Spiritual Care Week, Ron and Dorothy’s experience is a reminder of how spiritual counseling can provide comfort, connection and guidance to patients and families.

Of the many Care Dimensions employees who volunteer throughout the year, 13 recently had the opportunity to lend a hand at the Cradles to Crayons Massachusetts Giving Factory Warehouse in Newton.

Representing departments throughout our organization, including Clinical Managers, Certified Nursing Assistants, Music Therapists, and more, our team worked together to support the important work of Cradles to Crayons, which provides everyday essentials to children across Massachusetts experiencing homelessness or living in low-income situations.

Through the Care Dimensions Employee Volunteering Program, employees can take up to four hours of paid time each year to volunteer with organizations and causes that matter to them. We’re glad to have had the opportunity to work alongside the Cradles to Crayons team and contribute to their work supporting children and families throughout our state.

When Nancy learned that Care Dimensions was launching an End-of-Life Doula Program, she knew she wanted to be part of it. Having been involved with Care Dimensions for six years and bringing her own experience and passion as an End-of-Life Doula, Nancy welcomed the opportunity to help establish a program, knowing it would make a meaningful difference in the lives of hospice patients and their families.

Today, as Coordinator of our End-of-Life Doula Program, Nancy leads a dedicated team of volunteer doulas who have completed specialized training in end-of-life care. These individuals generously contribute their time, training, and expertise to this important work.

One of the newest additions to Care Dimensions' Complementary Therapies, which include music therapy, massage therapy, pet therapy, reiki, and other services that enhance patient comfort and well-being, our End-of-Life Doula Program provides another layer of personalized care and support for hospice patients and their loved ones. Doulas offer non-medical, holistic support before, during, and after death, complementing the expertise of our interdisciplinary hospice team and helping address the emotional, practical, and personal needs of each patient and family.

“Every person's end-of-life journey is different, and sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer is simply being present, listening, and understanding what matters most to them. I am excited to lead a team of individuals who share that commitment and to help ensure that patients and families have the support they need during such an important time in their lives.”

For nearly 50 years, Care Dimensions has continued to introduce programs and services that enhance the care we provide and improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. Our End-of-Life Doula Program is another example of that ongoing commitment.

Dr. Lewis goes above and beyond for her patients as a Palliative Care Physician at Care Dimensions. In her recent nomination of Dr. Lewis for a Spotlight Award, Galen, a nurse at Care Dimensions, highlighted her “compassion and responsiveness, bolstered by her exemplary collaboration between several different parties for fast results. Dr. Lewis’s dedication to collaboration and patient care makes a meaningful difference for the patients and families she serves.

In her nomination, Patrice, Director of Bereavement and Pediatric Palliative Care, praised Maria’s exceptional organizational skills and the strong relationships she builds with colleagues across various teams at Care Dimensions. Through her collaboration and dedication, Maria helps ensure our bereaved families receive thoughtful, coordinated care.

What can we expect as dementia progresses? How should we respond when a loved one’s behavior changes? And how can we communicate in a way that reduces frustration and helps them feel understood?

Those were just some of the questions discussed during Brooksby Village’s annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Week, where Mary Crowe, Director of Professional and Community Education at Care Dimensions, was one of the featured speakers.

Mary presented “Dementia Through the Stages,” helping attendees better understand how dementia can affect a person’s behaviors, emotions, and abilities as the disease progresses. But some of the most meaningful discussion came through the questions from the audience, from what families might expect during different stages of dementia to practical ways to approach, communicate with and support a loved one living with the disease.

Mary also shared information about Care Dimensions’ Dementia GUIDE program and the resources available to help people living with dementia and the family members and caregivers supporting them.

Thank you to Brooksby Village for making dementia education an important part of your annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Week, and to everyone who participated, asked questions, and helped make the session such an engaging conversation.

Carole Remick spent her life believing in people. Her favorite words of encouragement were simple: “You are terrific.”

During her 48-hour stay at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Carole found peace in the gardens, calming music and, most importantly, the kindness of the staff. When a nurse asked what she could do to make Carole more comfortable, Carole had one request: a coffee milkshake. The team happily delivered.

After her passing, the Carole Remick Charitable Foundation honored her legacy with a $10,000 gift to Care Dimensions, supporting the refurbishment of the Healing Garden outside the Kaplan House chapel and Camp Stepping Stones, our summer bereavement camp for children and families.

Now, Carole’s words will remain part of that special place. A tribute brick inscribed with her name and “You are terrific” will be placed in the Garden of Remembrance at the Kaplan House.

Tribute bricks offer families and friends a meaningful way to honor someone special while creating a lasting tribute in the spaces where patients and families find peace. Bricks can be purchased in memory or honor of a loved one and placed on the grounds of either of our Care Dimensions hospice houses; the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers or the Care Dimensions Hospice House on the Lincoln/Waltham line.
