he University of South Alabama (2013) and my Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (2015) from the same university. I have 8 years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist (Speech Therapist) in Skilled Nursing Facility settings, treating adult conditions such as stroke/CVA, traumatic brain injury (TBI), Parkinson’s disease, dementia, cognitive-communication disorders, and dysphagia (swallowing disorders). My work is driven by two big passions: communication and swallowing. Most people expect mobility might change over time, but almost nobody anticipates what it feels like when talking becomes difficult, or when eating and drinking stop feeling simple. I knew I was in the right field when I observed a stroke survivor with expressive aphasia fight their way back to saying, “I love you.”

I’m especially passionate about swallowing therapy because swallowing impacts more than nutrition; it impacts confidence and connection. Meals are where life happens. When swallowing becomes difficult, people often start avoiding food and social gatherings, and isolation grows fast. My goal is to help you safely rebuild skills so daily life feels normal again. At Jubilee Speech Therapy, I provide adult speech therapy, cognitive therapy, and swallowing therapy (dysphagia treatment) in in-home and outpatient settings so the progress we make carries over into everyday routines. Having trouble swallowing? The right treatment starts with finding the reason why.

Not every swallowing problem, or dysphagia, needs the same solution. That’s why effective swallowing therapy shouldn’t begin with a random exercise found online. At Jubilee Speech Therapy, we first evaluate what may be causing the difficulty. Is the problem related to strength, timing, coordination, sensation, or another part of the swallowing process?

Once we understand what’s happening, we can build an individualized dysphagia treatment plan based on that person’s needs.

Treatment may include targeted swallowing exercises, pacing and positioning strategies, mealtime techniques, caregiver education, and/or recommendations for additional swallowing testing when appropriate. Because the goal is simple: find the swallowing problem first, then choose the right treatment for it.

About 50 pairs of muscles help make swallowing happen. Fifty pairs! Just to get that bite of sandwich safely headed toward your stomach. And when those muscles aren’t working together the way they should, eating and drinking can become harder than they need to be.

Jubilee Speech Therapy can evaluate swallowing and use targeted exercises and techniques to help improve strength, timing, and coordination. Because dinner shouldn’t feel like work.

Does someone’s voice sound wet, bubbly or gurgly after eating or drinking? That can be one sign of a swallowing problem, even when there was no obvious choking.

One symptom alone can’t diagnose dysphagia. But when it happens often, especially with coughing or throat clearing, it’s worth mentioning to a healthcare provider.

During conversations, David started pausing more often. He knew the word. He could picture it. But he couldn’t always say it. At first, everyone laughed it off. Then it began happening enough to frustrate him.

Outpatient speech therapy and home health speech therapy can both help with speech, swallowing, memory, cognition, and communication.

The biggest difference? Home health comes to the patient when leaving home is difficult or unsafe, while outpatient therapy is for patients who can safely travel to appointments and benefit from focused care in a clinic or private practice setting.

Different settings. Same goal: helping people communicate, swallow, and participate more confidently in daily life.
