What could postpartum depression have to do with perimenopause years later? More than you might think. 🧠✨

Emerging research is looking at an important connection between reproductive transitions and mental health.

Pregnancy, postpartum and perimenopause all involve significant changes in reproductive hormones. Research suggests that some women may be particularly sensitive to these hormonal fluctuations, and a history of postpartum or other reproductive-related depression may be an important part of the picture when evaluating mood changes during perimenopause.

A recent 2026 study found an association between a history of perinatal depression and greater depressive symptom severity during the menopause transition.

That does not mean having postpartum depression means you'll experience depression during perimenopause. It means your history matters.

If you're experiencing changes in mood, sleep, energy or overall well-being during perimenopause, don't leave out something that happened 10, 20 or even 30 years ago when talking with your healthcare provider.
