It Didn't Happen All at Once

Most women don't wake up one morning feeling disconnected from themselves.
It happens gradually.
A season of caregiving.
A move.
A demanding career.
A relationship that requires compromise.
Years spent adapting to what life asks of you.
At first, those adjustments make sense. They help you navigate difficult seasons and support the people you care about.
But over time, something subtle can happen.
You become so skilled at noticing everyone else's needs, schedules, preferences, and emotions that your own voice grows quieter.
Not because it disappeared.
Because you've had less practice listening to it.
Many women who feel disconnected from themselves aren't selfish, indecisive, or lost.
They're often responsible, capable, caring people who have spent years doing what was necessary.
Sometimes the work isn't becoming someone new.
Sometimes it's simply learning to hear yourself again.
When was the last time you noticed what you wanted before considering what everyone else needed?

Sometimes the hardest part is remembering you're a person who deserves care, too. Many military spouses become so skilled...

Sometimes the hardest part is remembering you're a person who deserves care, too.

Many military spouses become so skilled at taking care of everyone else that their own needs slowly move to the bottom of the list.
Not intentionally.
Just gradually.
A little more responsibility here.
A little more flexibility there.
Another move.
Another transition.
Another season of adapting.
Years later, you may realize you've become the person everyone depends on.
But you haven't had much space to ask what you need.
Or how you're doing.
Or what parts of yourself have been waiting for attention.
Being dependable is valuable.
Being needed is meaningful.
But neither should require disappearing from your own life.
What part of yourself has been asking for your attention lately?

Myth vs. Reality: What Strength Really Means

MYTH:
"If I'm really resilient, I should be able to handle all of this on my own."
REALITY:
Military spouses hear a lot about being strong.
Over time, many begin to believe that struggling means they're not handling things well enough.
That needing support means they're falling short.
That exhaustion means they're not resilient enough.
But resilience was never meant to mean feeling unaffected.
It was never meant to mean carrying every burden alone.
You can be capable and overwhelmed.
Independent and lonely.
Strong and exhausted.
Grateful and grieving.
Those experiences can exist together.
The truth is that difficult circumstances affect people.
Not because they're weak.
Because they're human.
You do not have to reach a breaking point before your experience matters.
What would change if you stopped measuring your strength by how much you can carry alone?

The Weight People Don't See

People often describe military spouses as strong.
And they are.
But strength can be misleading when it's the only thing people notice.
What often goes unseen is everything happening underneath it.
The mental checklist that never seems to end.
The constant adjustments.
The appointments, schedules, plans, and responsibilities that somehow keep multiplying.
The quiet worry.
The emotional labor of holding space for everyone else's feelings while setting your own aside.
Over time, carrying that much can become so normal that you stop noticing how heavy it feels.
You keep moving because that's what military life has taught you to do.
But just because you've learned how to carry it doesn't mean it hasn't affected you.
Sometimes the hardest part isn't what happened.
It's how much you've been holding without anyone realizing.
What feels heaviest for you right now that few people seem to see?

Being strong isn't the same as carrying everything alone.

Many women have spent years being the dependable one.

The one everyone calls.
The one who keeps things together.
The one who knows what to do.

From the outside, it looks like strength.

And it is.

But strength doesn't mean you never get tired.
It doesn't mean your needs stop mattering.
It doesn't mean you have to carry more than one heart was ever meant to carry.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is notice the weight you've been holding for far too long.

You deserve to exist in your own life—not just as the person everyone depends on, but as a person with dreams, needs, and a life of your own.

If this resonates with you, I've written more about this journey here:

Most women don't set out to lose themselves.

It happens quietly.

One responsibility becomes another. One season turns into years. Caring for everyone else slowly becomes the way you move through the world.

The things that once felt like you—your interests, your dreams, your rest, your joy—gradually move to the bottom of the list.

Not because they stopped mattering.

Because everyone else's needs felt more urgent.

If this feels familiar, you're not alone.

The first step back to yourself doesn't have to be dramatic.

Sometimes it begins with simply noticing what's been missing.

If you'd like to read more, I've shared the full reflection here:

The Question That Feels Hard to Answer

For some women, one of the hardest questions isn't:

"What should I do next?"

It's:

"What do I want?"

Not because the answer isn't there.

But because they've spent so much time caring for everyone else's needs that their own voice has become difficult to hear.

Sometimes the realization arrives quietly:

"I don't actually know what I want anymore."

That realization can feel unsettling.

But it can also be the beginning of coming home to yourself.

I explore this quiet turning point—and why it matters—in my latest blog.

Sometimes Losing Yourself Doesn’t Happen All At Once

It doesn't happen in a single moment.

It happens quietly.

A class you keep meaning to take.

A walk you keep postponing.

A book you never finish.

A friend you haven't called back.

Little by little, your days become filled with responsibilities, obligations, and everyone else's needs.

You become the one everyone counts on.

The one who listens.

The one who keeps things together.

And because you're capable, no one notices what's disappearing.

Maybe not even you.

If this feels familiar, you're not alone.

I wrote about this quiet process of losing ourselves—and how we begin finding our way back—in my latest blog.
