One of the biggest things I see in my daily work? Adults reacting to a child’s behavior without first understanding what the behavior is communicating.
“He’s being defiant.”
“She’s manipulating.”
“They just don’t listen.”
But what if there’s a missing skill underneath the behavior?
Sometimes the issue isn’t that a child doesn’t WANT to communicate it’s that they don’t yet know HOW to communicate what they’re feeling, needing, or experiencing.
And when communication breaks down, relationships can break down too.
Improper communication can create frustration, disconnection, and conflict on both sides. Therapy can help us understand the why behind the behavior and build healthier ways to communicate, regulate, cope, and connect.
Behavior therapy and mental health therapy aren’t about “fixing” a child. They’re about giving children and families the tools to understand each other better.
Because sometimes, changing the behavior starts with changing the way we understand it.
