Clinical trials help researchers evaluate potential new ways to prevent, detect, and treat lung cancer. Depending on a patient’s diagnosis and eligibility, a trial may provide access to an emerging treatment or a new combination of existing therapies.

However, every clinical trial has specific requirements, potential benefits, and possible risks. Before participating, patients should ask their healthcare team:

✔️What is the purpose of this trial?
✔️Why might I be eligible?
✔️How could it affect my current treatment?
✔️What additional appointments or tests are required?
✔️What costs are covered?

There is no safe level of secondhand smoke exposure. For children, exposure can contribute to respiratory infections, ear infections, asthma attacks, and slowed lung growth. In adults who do not smoke, secondhand smoke can also increase the risk of developing lung cancer.

Help protect the whole family by keeping homes and vehicles smoke-free—even when children are not present. Learn more about secondhand smoke and ways to reduce exposure: https://www.lungcancercenter.com/news/5-tips-avoid-secondhand-smoke/.

A smoker’s cough may be ongoing, but new or changing symptoms should not be ignored.

If your cough gets worse, feels different, or occurs alongside symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or blood in your mucus, talk to a healthcare provider. A cough’s sound or mucus color alone cannot determine whether it is lung cancer.

Learn how a smoker’s cough may differ from a lung cancer cough and when to seek medical care: https://www.lungcancercenter.com/lung-cancer/symptoms/smokers-cough/.

Asbestos was once valued throughout the aviation and aerospace industries for its strength and resistance to heat. It could be found in aircraft brake systems, insulation, adhesives, composite materials, and other components.

Aircraft mechanics, aerospace manufacturing and assembly workers, operations technicians, supply chain employees, and some U.S. Air Force personnel may have been exposed to asbestos while producing, repairing, or maintaining aircraft and related equipment.

Because asbestos-related illnesses can take decades to develop, former aviation and aerospace workers should tell their healthcare providers about any known or suspected occupational exposure.

As World Lung Cancer Day approaches, it's important to remember that not all lung cancer diagnoses are linked to smoking.

Occupational exposures to substances such as asbestos, diesel exhaust, radon, and other harmful materials can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. Veterans, construction workers, shipyard employees, and industrial workers may face elevated risks due to past workplace exposures.

On August 1, we recognize World Lung Cancer Day and the patients, families, caregivers, and advocates working to improve awareness, research, and access to care.
