While I’m still in the infancy of my midwifery journey, I’ve already been blessed with lots of wonderful nuggets of wisdom. One of them - train how you want to practice. Part of that for me looks like making space for both midwifery and policy work. Since doing both is center to how I wish to show up in this work, I’m being intentional about making room for them while I’m apprenticing. I don’t take for granted that I have the space and support to do just that.

This week I got to join my MomsRising.org friends to talk about the importance (and how) to center parent voices while shaping policy - the core of who we are and what we do! Getting to do this alongside some of my favorite people - chef’s kiss!! What an absolute joy. My heart is SO full.

Added bonus - I got to drop off my absentee ballot in-person, check out the middle schooler new haircut (what?!?) and enjoy a date night with hubby.

I may have paid for it all week, but student midwives gotta have fun too!

Camper couture, if you will.

Also, don’t judge me if you see me rotating through a handful of business outfits. Bump does not have a walk-in closet.

Turns out arriving and settling in are two very different things. I’ve spent the last week or so finding a new rhythm after driving across country and getting settled in LA, wrapping up my midwifery school quarter, navigating a pile of grant deadlines at work, and starting clinic.

It’s been a lot of figuring out what my days look like, when I rest (?!?), and how all the pieces fit together. Slowly, but surely, I’m finding my flow!

Somewhere in the middle of all of that, I finished one of my fullest quarters of school yet AND officially completed the first phase of my clinical training. On to Phase Two!

Milestones y’all - MILESTONES!!

With the schoolwork submitted, the grants (almost) behind me, and clinic underway, it felt like a good time to indulge in some salty, beachy air.

We discuss maternal health, including recent vaccine rollbacks and the importance of national breastfeeding month with Tina Sherman of MomsRising.

I’m always up for a road trip, but towing the camper all the way across the country - this was a whole new level! I got to enjoy the scenery and spend some time with some of my favorite people along the way. And of course, pulling up into gas stations (or really anywhere) with a pink Jeep AND a pink camper was always a conversation starter.

3,185 miles. It was long. I’m tired. But it was also pretty damn amazing!!

I’m spending the weekend getting settled, squeezing in some schoolwork, and getting some much needed rest. Monday I’m back in my MomsRising office, and later in the week, clinicals begin.

A little milestone in my clinical lactation journey -
and of all the families I could have gotten to support - twins!

It feels like quite a gift to be able to take what I’m learning and use it to hold space for another twin family. They might be teenagers, but those early feeding days weren’t that long ago. Getting to pay that forward on the clinical side is a pretty sweet full-circle moment.
