Neuropsychologists emphasize neuroanatomy imaging because it allows them to directly correlate observed cognitive, emotional, and behavioral deficits with specific structural or functional abnormalities in the brain, bridging the gap between brain and behavior. Imaging modalities such as MRI, fMRI, and PET scans enable clinicians to identify lesions, atrophy, or disrupted connectivity in regions like the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, or temporal lobes that map onto the cognitive domains being assessed. This is particularly critical in differential diagnosis, where two conditions may present with similar neuropsychological profiles but arise from distinct neuropathological substrates, for example, distinguishing Alzheimer’s disease from frontotemporal dementia. Ultimately, integrating imaging data with neuropsychological test performance strengthens diagnostic precision, informs prognosis, and guides treatment planning in ways that behavioral data alone cannot fully achieve.
