October is ADHD Awareness Month, and I’m marking it by presenting a virtual CME/NCPD session for El Paso Children’s Hospital: Understanding ADHD: Causes, Brain Function, and Executive Skills.

Awareness matters most when it changes how we respond. A child who forgets, interrupts, or melts down isn’t choosing to defy us. More often, the brain’s “air traffic control” system, the frontal circuits that plan, prioritize, and put on the brakes, is still under construction. When we see behavior through that lens, our response changes from frustration to support. Designed for pediatricians, family practice physicians, nurses, NPs, PAs, and residents.

Proud to share that LarLo co-founder, Dr. Lizette Lara, M.D., is a co-author on a newly published case report in Personalized Medicine in Psychiatry (2026).

The article, “Obsessive-compulsive disorder with psychotic features: A case report highlighting cultural and religious barriers to treatment,” describes a 31-year-old Hispanic man with severe intrusive obsessions, covert compulsions, and psychotic features. His diagnosis and treatment course were shaped not only by the illness itself, but by religious beliefs, cultural interpretations of mental illness, financial limitations, and limited access to care.

This work matters to our community. In El Paso and across the border region, many families understand psychiatric symptoms through a spiritual or moral lens, and concepts like fatalismo can delay help-seeking. The authors make a clear case for culturally sensitive psychoeducation, family involvement, and flexible treatment strategies when presentations are complex.

Dr. Lara brings exactly this perspective to her work as a forensic and adult psychiatrist: rigorous clinical thinking, paired with deep respect for the cultural context our patients live in. Congratulations to her and to co-authors Neha Bhupathiraju, Alireza Bahadorkhan, Guadalupe Vidal, and Silvina Tonarelli of Paul L. Foster School of Medicine and the TTUHSC El Paso Department of Psychiatry.

This milestone is the product of years of relentless effort, sacrifice, and an unshakable determination to see it through. Watching your journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Your grit, your discipline, and your refusal to settle have carried you to this moment, and the favor of God has been evident over your life every step of the way.

Neuropsychologists emphasize neuroanatomy imaging because it allows them to directly correlate observed cognitive, emotional, and behavioral deficits with specific structural or functional abnormalities in the brain, bridging the gap between brain and behavior. Imaging modalities such as MRI, fMRI, and PET scans enable clinicians to identify lesions, atrophy, or disrupted connectivity in regions like the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, or temporal lobes that map onto the cognitive domains being assessed. This is particularly critical in differential diagnosis, where two conditions may present with similar neuropsychological profiles but arise from distinct neuropathological substrates, for example, distinguishing Alzheimer’s disease from frontotemporal dementia. Ultimately, integrating imaging data with neuropsychological test performance strengthens diagnostic precision, informs prognosis, and guides treatment planning in ways that behavioral data alone cannot fully achieve.
