Neuropsychologists emphasize neuroanatomy imaging because it allows them to directly correlate observed cognitive, emotional, and behavioral deficits with specific structural or functional abnormalities in the brain, bridging the gap between brain and behavior. Imaging modalities such as MRI, fMRI, and PET scans enable clinicians to identify lesions, atrophy, or disrupted connectivity in regions like the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, or temporal lobes that map onto the cognitive domains being assessed. This is particularly critical in differential diagnosis, where two conditions may present with similar neuropsychological profiles but arise from distinct neuropathological substrates, for example, distinguishing Alzheimer’s disease from frontotemporal dementia. Ultimately, integrating imaging data with neuropsychological test performance strengthens diagnostic precision, informs prognosis, and guides treatment planning in ways that behavioral data alone cannot fully achieve.

By the way, what is forensic psychiatry?

Dr. Lara wrapped up mock trials with El Paso County district attorneys this week. However some may ask, what in the world is forensic psychiatry? Well here it goes.. Forensic psychiatry sits at the intersection of medicine, mental health, and the legal system, a specialty that requires equal command of clinical expertise and courtroom credibility. Forensic psychiatrists evaluate individuals involved in legal proceedings, offering expert opinions on matters such as competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, and risk of future violence. Their work spans both criminal and civil contexts, including personal injury cases, disability determinations, child custody disputes, and correctional mental health care. Unlike traditional clinical psychiatry, the primary obligation in forensic work shifts from the patient’s therapeutic needs to the pursuit of objective, evidence-based truth, a nuanced distinction that demands both ethical rigor and specialized training. For communities and legal systems navigating the complex overlap of mental illness and the law, forensic psychiatrists serve as essential translators between two worlds that rarely speak the same language.

Using a Sandglass to Train Time Management

Did you know a simple sandglass timer can strengthen your brain’s time management skills?

For many people especially those with ADHD time can feel abstract. Minutes pass, but the brain doesn’t always feel them. A sandglass makes time visible.

When you flip the glass, you create a clear beginning and end. Your brain can literally see time moving, grain by grain. This activates an important executive function called temporal awareness the ability to monitor and regulate how long a task takes.

Try this simple strategy:• Flip a 5 minute sandglass• Focus on just one task until the sand runs out• Take a short reset, then repeat

This method reduces overwhelm, improves task initiation, and builds sustained attention.

Over time, the brain begins to internalize the rhythm of time making planning, organization, and productivity easier.

Sometimes the most powerful cognitive tools are also the simplest.

If you’ve Googled “Is this dementia?” at 2am… this is for you.

Not all memory problems are Alzheimer’s.
And guessing won’t give you peace of mind.

A neuropsychological evaluation is a deep dive into how your brain is actually functioning — memory, attention, problem-solving, language — the whole picture.

Because changes can come from stress, depression, sleep issues… or conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, or frontotemporal dementia.

Testing helps tell the difference.

And here’s the powerful part:
Even if everything looks okay, you now have a baseline. So if something changes later, you’re not starting from scratch.
