Tornado Safety: “Where Would You Go Right Now?”
Make this a family preparedness post:

-Lowest level of the building.
-Interior room away from windows.
-Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible.
-Have shoes, flashlights, medications, phone chargers/power banks, and helmets readily available.
-Make sure children know the family’s tornado location.
- Don’t rely solely on outdoor warning sirens—have multiple ways to receive alerts.

# # # ❤️ “But I Don’t Need a Certification… Why Is There a Fee?”

This is a question that occasionally comes up, and it’s a fair one.

Not everyone who wants to learn CPR, AED use, choking response, or basic first aid needs an official certification card. Sometimes a family, church, community group, business, or organization simply wants **practical, hands-on lifesaving instruction**.

But **no certification doesn’t mean no cost.**

When you book Heart Warrior CPR + First Aid for non-certification instruction, you’re not paying for a piece of paper. You’re paying for the **training itself**.

Behind every class are:

🫀 **Professional training equipment** — CPR manikins, AED trainers, first-aid supplies, replacement lungs, face shields, cleaning supplies, and other equipment that must be purchased, maintained, sanitized, and eventually replaced.

🏢 **Classroom & business expenses** — Training space, insurance, utilities, equipment storage, administrative expenses, and the many other costs involved in operating a professional training business.

📚 **Knowledge & experience** — You’re receiving instruction from someone who has spent years working in healthcare and continues to invest time and money into maintaining the knowledge and skills necessary to teach others effectively.

⏰ **Time** — Preparing equipment, traveling when applicable, setting up, teaching, answering questions, providing hands-on practice, cleaning equipment, and packing everything back up all require time.

Most importantly, you're paying for the opportunity to **practice these skills with an instructor there to guide you, correct you, and answer your questions.**

A certification card has value—but **the card isn't the most valuable thing you leave with.**

The real value is knowing what to do when someone collapses, when a child is choking, when an AED arrives, or when someone is seriously injured.

❤️ **Heart Warrior CPR + First Aid is happy to provide non-certification training for families, churches, businesses, community organizations, coaches, caregivers and other groups.**

Because you don't need to need a certification card to want to know how to **save a life.**

**Be prepared. Save lives. Make a difference.**

Flooding: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”
Focus on why floodwater is deceptive and what families should do:

-Never drive through a flooded roadway.
-Avoid walking through moving floodwater.
-Keep children away from flooded creeks, drainage ditches, culverts, and detention basins.
-Remember that floodwater can hide washouts, debris, open drains, and electrical hazards.
-If water is rising around your home, move to higher ground early rather than waiting.

Why I’m Not a Fan of All-Night Sleepovers (From a school resource officer)

I used to see sleepovers as a rite of passage.
A chance for kids to experience other homes, other routines, and different family dynamics.

That used to be a fairly predictable environment (not always).
These days… it’s a lot less predictable.

As someone who works with youth and takes real reports, I strongly caution parents about all-night sleepovers. Not because every home is unsafe, but because there are simply too many variables you cannot control once your child is in someone else’s house overnight.

Years ago, many families operated with similar expectations around supervision, media, and boundaries. Today, parenting styles, device rules, and values can vary wildly from house to house.

Here are a few things parents should realistically think about:

1. Privacy & Recording Concerns
Technology is smaller and more accessible than ever. Cameras and recording devices can be easily hidden and used without guests knowing. I have personally taken reports involving recording devices placed in bedrooms and bathrooms involving visiting children. This is not a comfortable topic, but it is a real one.

2. Devices & Social Media Rules
Your family’s rules may not match another family’s rules.
Will kids have unrestricted internet access?
Are they allowed on social media all night?
Will they be exposed to inappropriate content or conversations with strangers?
Even if the hosting parent has rules, other kids may bring devices your child didn’t know about.

3. Supervision Differences
Some homes have strong structure and supervision. Others are more relaxed.
Late nights, older siblings, visitors coming and going, or lack of adult oversight can all change the environment quickly.

4. Firearm Safety
Gun storage practices vary greatly between households.
I would like to believe every home follows strict safety practices, but in reality, that is not always the case. This is one of the biggest concerns parents often forget to ask about.

This doesn’t mean every sleepover is dangerous.
It means parents should be intentional, ask questions, and truly know the household before agreeing to an overnight stay.

In many cases, a late-night hangout and pickup before bedtime removes a large portion of the risk while still allowing kids to socialize.

Parenting today requires more awareness than it did 10 or 20 years ago.
You are not being overprotective. You are being informed.

Happy Parenting,
Officer Gomez
