One of the most stressful parts of dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease) is the uncertainty of what comes next. Since each person’s experience with the disease unfolds differently (often dramatically so), no one can say exactly how or when their thinking, behavior, memory, or abilities will change over time.

Since they are the ones with injured brains, we have to be the ones to change our behavior towards them.

While going to a restaurant can be a pleasant event for those with dementia, it does present its own set of challenges. The change in routine and social connections can be quite stressful for seniors with dementia – as can be menu choices, an unfamiliar environment, and overwhelming stimulation.

That’s not to say that it’s better to keep those with dementia home, however. When someone with dementia is resisting when you’re trying to help them, it actually might be paratonia.

Passive movement occurs when someone is lifting your arm without you engaging at all. Paratonia is defined as active resistance against passive movement. It is a reflex in late-stage dementia, and often cannot be controlled.

Ironically, someone with paratonia can often stand up and walk alone using active movement. The difficulty is only when passive movement is used.

It can be easy to overreact when a person with dementia starts to wander off, panicking and insisting they get back inside.

That’s not usually the best approach to dealing with the situation, however. It’s much wiser to appear to support their action, even asking if you can join them. You can then suggest you both go back inside so you can pack a few things first. Once inside, distract the person with something else.
