Every July, Disability Pride Month celebrates the achievements, resilience, and contributions of people living with disabilities. One important component of independence is reliable transportation. Mobility disabilities are physical impairments caused by injury, illness or age, that impact the way the body moves. A mobility disability can involve gross motor skills like walking or fine motor skills like grabbing or holding objects. Twelve percent of American adults 35-64 have a mobility disability that makes walking, climbing stairs or driving difficult to impossible.

A mobility disability that prevents driving can make holding a job or even basic independence a serious challenge. Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) for mobility disabilities helps remove those transportation barriers. NEMT is safe and dependable whether someone uses a wheelchair, walker, scooter, or simply struggles with mobility.

Mental Health Awareness Month in May offers an opportunity to discuss mental health access for older adults. Mental health struggles affect as many as twenty percent of seniors across the United States. Many of them are quietly struggling with depression, anxiety, or grief. Did you know that strokes are the leading cause of permanent disability in adults? Every year, according to the American Brain Foundation, more than 800,000 Americans suffer a stroke, and nearly 150,000 die from it. Only about ten percent of stroke victims recover almost completely. The majority require physical, occupational and speech therapy to a lesser or greater extent. Recovery often continues long after hospital discharge.

Survivors are adjusting to their new reality while fighting to regain independence and normalcy. They need support to rebuild their strength, confidence and security to get back to their regular lives. The new daily routine can be physically and emotionally exhausting, and family members can suddenly face caregiving responsibilities they never expected.

For stroke survivors, healing rarely ends after emergency treatment. Many stroke survivors continue physical, occupational and emotional therapy for months or years after their stroke. Stroke survivor home care solutions are so important when recovering safely in the face of physical impairments is so hard. Working with a professional caregiver helps stroke survivors stay safer, healthier, and more comfortable at home.

Missing a medical appointment might not seem like a big deal. But for someone with a neurological condition, the impact can be serious. Checking in with doctors regularly keeps symptoms stable and helps prevent complications. Getting to those appointments, however, is not always simple.

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation, or NEMT, is the answer for many neurological patients. April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time to highlight the everyday challenges patients and families face. The availability of reliable rides is one of the most common and overlooked barriers to good healthcare.

Access to care shouldn’t depend on the patient’s ability to drive. Seniors with Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions need safe, reliable transportation to keep up with their healthcare. Their independence and dignity both depend on that transportation.

NEMT fills an important gap in the care journey. NEMT service allows patients reach appointments safely without added risk. Families appreciate the support, and patients are happy to enjoy greater independence. A simple shift to planning to use NEMT services can improve overall quality of life.
