So what exactly is Cupping Therapy?
It's an ancient form of therapy that came to Europe and America in the 19th century, where silicone or glass cups are placed on the skin to create negative pressure (decompression) to the tissue.
Therapists can either use heat or a pump to remove the air that lifts the soft tissue.
It has roots in ancient Egyptian, Chinese, Greek and Islamic medicine, dating back to 1550 B.C. In Egypt.
In TCM, their practice is a way to balance the bodies yin and yang and improve Qi flow.
The Greek documented its use for treating musculoskeletal disorders, gynecology and respiratory issues.
In Islamic medicine, it's both a physical and spiritual form of therapy believed to purify the body by drawing out impurities and stimulate the immune system.
So what does cupping actually do and what are the benefits?
When a therapist places cups on the body, they are left on for about 10mins. During this time the suction force expands and breaks open capillaries (blood vessels) underneath the skin.
Cupping benefits:
•releases trigger points "knots"
•reduces pain/inflammation
•decreases muscle tightness
•improves blood flow
•increase range of motion
•helps with arthritis
•migraines
And the list goes on!
Anyone can benefit from cupping therapy, whether your an athlete training for a marathon, if you train multiple days a week, to if you work a blue collar job, desk job, a stay at home mom or really anything in between.
