Falls can happen for many reasons, but there are some simple things we can do to help prevent them.
Here are 5 things to keep in mind:
Keep pathways clear. Pick up clutter, secure loose rugs, keep cords out of walkways, and make sure stairs are easy to navigate. Handrails and grab bars can also make a big difference.
Stay active and work on balance. Walking, strength exercises, and balance activities can help keep you strong and steady. If you’re starting something new, check with your healthcare provider or physical therapist to find activities that are right for you.
Review your medications. Some medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in blood pressure. Talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about your medications, especially if you’ve noticed any changes. Don’t stop taking a prescribed medication without talking to your healthcare provider first.
Keep up with vision and hearing checks. Being able to see and hear your surroundings clearly can help you stay aware and steady. Make sure your glasses or contacts are up to date and that you’re using them as recommended.
Wear supportive shoes. Choose shoes that fit well and have good support and nonslip soles. Be careful with loose slippers, socks on smooth floors, and shoes that are worn out.
A few small changes around the home and in our daily routines can go a long way toward preventing falls. Take a few minutes this week to look around and see what changes you can make.
