It's Make and Bake (minus the bake) for a healthy summer treat which you can do all year long for breakfast or any meal!
This is my go-to smoothie which I frequently do for breakfast or an afternoon pick me up. It's loaded with protein, fiber and calcium. You can add additional protein powder or I like to use peanut or almond butter or more calcium with fruits and vegetables.
Enjoy- cheers to good health!

Sunday Blessing
If you are ever in question of the plans and purpose of your life- look at the stars placed so special in the sky, each with a unique glow and constellation when clustered together. In the same space you have a specific reason and gift and when among others, you also create a beautiful constellation.
You are beautifully and wonderfully made.

God Bless,
Emily

It's Tick season in Maine!
If you are headed out for a hike today prevent ticks by using a repellent such as DEET around your ankles and lemon/eucalyptus can also help over your whole body. Where light clothing to spot ticks and make a fashion statement by tucking your pants into socks!
If you find a tick after your adventure, use tweezers to remove and clean the area with soap and water.

Friday Fun!
You've heard of Dear Abby, here is Ask Em! If you have a health related question, symptom or something you are a little anxious to say outloud if it is natural- send me your symptoms and let's talk about it! [email protected]
This month is a frequent humidity feature for both genders but especially common for females. Under the folds - whether fat, breast or skin is a lovely nest for yeast. This can manifest as red patches that this time of year can also be confusing if a tick bite and bulls eye rash. A distinct feature is the smell and usually appearing after humidity and sweating.
To care for yourself- cotton is going to help wick away the moisture, soap and water to clean and there is a cream prescription if needed.
I offer non-member acute urgent visits via telehealth if you need further consult and care!

Have you ever heard the saying "medications are poisons?" Sounds harsh and definately gets your attention but I promise this is not something I made up or can take credit for. I heard this constantly while earning my nursing degrees and this week while attending the University of Vermont's Family Medicine conference an Endocrinologist said it as well. So what is up with this strong statement! It certainly is not intended to offend but in a culture where there is a pill for everything and America over-prescribes it can sound judgemental. The truth is medicine is a science of evidence based practice and art of conversation and appreciating someone. Instead of simply prescribing a pill based on a generic guideline, it's important to consider side effects and the whole person; are we doing more harm than good? And can similar or even better be achieved with alternative or complementary therapies? Europe and specifically Scandinavian communities lead the world in writing lifestyle prescriptions; they literally write patients a prescription for a 30 minute daily walk, 10 minutes of fresh air, an apple a day. Using natural, whole ingredients and lifestyle as our first prescription hopefully reduces harm and side effects and increases optimal wellbeing.. and it's not just my opinion or what came out of my mouth.

I hear a lot of feedback in the community regarding the confusion about what direct primary care is and thought I would lay out some points to chart the differences in the various care options!
DPC is a monthly membership (not billing insurance) that provides continuity of care, access, longer relaxed visits, direct communication with P*P, convenience and patient autonomy with a focus for care on personalized evidence based care and lifestyle.
In contrast DPC is not the "expensive-upper class" health care but often confused with concierge medicine which is a membership or fee for service and bills patient insurance. The benefits of concierge medicine is that it often comes to you and is offered 24/7 but with a steep cost.
Traditional primary care bills insurance or has self pay options but also comes with copays per visit and less often are even annual physicals covered. Access to care is challenging as there is triage to prioritize patients based on illness and usually a 6-12 month waitlist to establish care. Communication is team based and often a medical assistant works between patient and P*P to relay messages.

It's Spring Cleaning and let's make it Feng Shui!
When cleaning the living room for your health, keep in mind this is one of the most lived in spaces. Vacuuming and cleaning carpets and sitting (couches, chairs) regularly help to decongest and eliminate allergens.
Restore by balancing the space with candles, mirrors and even a fountain. These cozy additions add hygge or wellness to your home and self.
Take care of your environment and you!
